## Job Content

### Job overview

Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a 2 year fixed term contract Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.  This job will consist of 8 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week as an annualised contract.  The job plan includes on call duties as part of a 1 in 14 rota for Obstetrics. The successful applicant will be based at the Birmingham Women’s Hospital; they will work across gynaecology and obstetrics services, with a focus on Obstetrics and Tommy’s Miscarriage Clinic.

The successful candidate will be expected to be aware of local policies and procedures and to comply with the Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions of the Trust.  Where the Consultant manages employees of the Trust, they will be expected to observe the local employment and personnel policies and procedures.

### Main duties of the job

### GYNAECOLOGICAL

There are 20 Consultants practicing gynaecology with SAS doctors and GPs with specialist interests.  The Birmingham Women’s Hospital was the first in Britain to have Colposcopy Clinics. The Cancer Unit, Urogynaecology service, Minimal Access Surgery Service including endometriosis centre, Emergency Gynaecology Service, complex termination of pregnancy and Assisted Conception Unit make major contributions to the Trust’s Clinical Strategy, whilst a strong general gynaecological service underpins service provision and teaching.

### OBSTETRIC

The Trust carries out approximately 7,400 births per annum, supported by a team of Lecturers, Sub-speciality Trainees and Specialist Trainees (ST1-7), and the Regional Neonatal Service.

The hospital is a tertiary referral centre for obstetric problems throughout the region.  A range of maternal medicine clinics for cardiology, neurology, haematology, endocrine disorders, renal disease and rheumatology are run jointly with specialist physicians from University Hospital Birmingham.

The post will lead in governance management for Maternity Services. Key responsibilities include, overseeing governance processes (including risk management, incident review, and learning from adverse events), quality improvement, oversight of guidelines and policies, collaboration across the wider MDT, ensuring compliance with regulation (e.g. national standards, external review), and promoting training in governance and risk awareness.
