### Job summary

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Locum Consultant in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery. This post will be available from August 2026 for a period of 12 months. The post-holder will provide a comprehensive oesophagogastric, bariatric and general surgery practice. There will be opportunities to contribute to diagnostic and interventional endoscopy, and for the appropriate candidate, to contribute to the oesophagogastric cancer service.

The post-holder will provide a comprehensive oesophagogastric, bariatric and general surgery practice. There will be opportunities to contribute to diagnostic and interventional endoscopy, and for the appropriate candidate, to contribute to the oesophagogastric cancer service. The post will be based at St Jamess University Hospital. The successful applicant should hold Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent, and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director. Applicants should have established skills in general surgery, diagnostic endoscopy, complex hiatal surgery and bariatric surgery. Competence in oesophagogastric cancer surgery is desirable, and additional support will be available to the appropriate candidate as required. Excellent communication and team working skills, and a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential. Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share. ### Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will join an established Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery team comprising six consultants, including four full-time and two part-time surgeons, delivering a comprehensive range of benign and malignant Upper Gastrointestinal services.

The Leeds Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery Unit is one of the largest in the UK, performing approximately 80–100 oesophagogastric resections annually. The unit offers a broad spectrum of surgical approaches, including open, minimally invasive, and robotic techniques.

The service also provides a comprehensive Tier 4 bariatric surgery programme, alongside a full range of primary and revisional hiatal surgery procedures.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust operates a dedicated Emergency General Surgery (EGS) service, with substantive Consultant EGS Surgeons delivering emergency surgical care seven days a week between 08:00 and 18:00. The appointee will participate in a 1:10 on-call rota alongside other Upper Gastrointestinal and Pancreaticobiliary Surgeons, providing sub-specialist support to the EGS service during normal working hours and general surgical cover outside these hours.
