Applications are invited for an experienced candidate to join the Critical Care Directorate as a Locum Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine, working 10 sessions per week, based at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, with some cover also provided at the nearby University Hospital Llandough. This is a locum post available for a period of six months.

This is an exciting time to join the Health Board with reconfiguration of the Critical Care footprint and planned expansion of our services in line with growing demand.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary for this post is £125,509 per annum.

Applicants should preferably be an experienced consultant who can start the role within the next 3 months and is on the specialist register for ICM.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 yeast of of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

### Main duties of the job

The appointee will join a team of 30 Consultants in Intensive Care who have a variety of special interests including renal medicine, trauma, research, emergency surgery, and neurosciences.

There are excellent links with Cardiff University and Health Education & Improvement Wales (HEIW). As a teaching unit, we are driving forward a programme of medical education, international research, and innovations in intensive care. This is an excellent opportunity for dynamic individuals with the appropriate skills to join our multidisciplinary team.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Welsh language skills are not necessary

- Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working

### Research

- Ability to critically appraise research
- Commitment to assist in the directorate’s Research Strategy

### Teaching

**Essential**

- Evidence of teaching medical students and resident doctors

### Experience

**Essential**

- Experience of working in specialty critical care e.g. neurosurgery, trauma
- Familiarity with inter-hospital transfer of critically ill patients
- Familiarity of ultrasound and/or Echo
- Experience of working in a major trauma centre / Pre-hospital emergency medicine
- Broad experience in adult critical care
- Experienced Consultant

**Desirable**

- Experience as Trauma Team Leader
- Able to start within 3 months of interview date

### Management

**Essential**

- Evidence of effective leadership skills

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Postgraduate ICM qualification e.g. FICM, DICM, EDIC or equivalent
- On GMC Specialist Register for specialty

**Desirable**

- Echocardiography qualifications e.g. FICE, BSE accreditation
- Ultrasound qualification (CUSIC competent)

### Clinical Governance

- Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
- Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation
