Locum Consultant in Endocrinology

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time, fixed term locum consultant in the Department of Endocrinology at the Barts Cancer Centre, initially for a period of 12 months. The postholder will be based at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and will work with the endocrinology team in providing high quality care to endocrine and general medicine patients.The successful candidate will join an effective service during an exciting period of change and development. The service is currently moving to a new location with an expanded bed base and an opportunity to develop the Endocrine Centre of Excellence.

The Department of Endocrinology at St Bartholomew’s provides secondary, tertiary and quaternary endocrine services to East London, The City, Inner and Outer NE London and many centres around and beyond the UK. The department has developed a high international reputation for its research, teaching and clinical activities and recently received two separate international centre of excellence awards. It employs a multidisciplinary approach, incorporating adult and paediatric clinical endocrinology, and basic science in biochemistry and molecular biology to facilitate the investigation and treatment of endocrine disorders throughout lifespan.

### Main duties of the job

- To be an active member of the Endocrinology Department and to help deliver the departmental mission of excellence in clinical care and teaching.

To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive, efficient and high quality evidence-based Endocrinology service, with continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.

Leadership, development and organisation of the services in the charge of the post holder in line with the Trust/Divisional business plans. Liaison and communication with the Clinical Director for Endocrinology, the Divisional Director for Cancer Services, and the General Manager and Associate General Manager

- To develop his/her own interests within the specialty, including active participation in research progammes.
- To contribute to the provision of comprehensive, efficient and high-quality care throughout the treatment and management pathway of endocrinology and general medicine patients.

To undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients in their charge and the running of their clinics or departments.

To maintain up-to-date specialist knowledge and provide evidence based care for all patients.

To attend multidisciplinary team meetings.

- Other qualifications which might enhance the provision of the service e.g. Teaching qualification, management qualification and family members and all the members of the multi-disciplinary team
- Awareness and understanding of clinical governance issues.
- Good knowledge of, and the ability to use, spoken and written English
- Sufficient to perform the duties of the post with any aids and adaptations
- Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods to respond to questions and queries

### Skills

- Ability to co-ordinate and plan and execute research and routine studies
- Evidence of leadership
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and with colleagues at different locations
- Good oral and written communications skills
- Ability to relate to colleagues and other professionals and communicate between specialities and disciplines
- Ability to build and support a team
- Broad range of IT skills
- Evidence of experience in teaching and clinical/educational supervision

### Knowledge

- Wide knowledge of general internal medicine
- Extensive knowledge of clinical endocrine practice

**Desirable**

- Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate education
- Ability to supervise clinical research assistants

### Experience

**Essential**

- Endocrinology and general internal medicine experience at Consultant, Senior Registrar or Specialist Registrar grade
- Wide clinical experience in general medicine
- Extensive clinical experience in tertiary referral endocrinology, including endocrine oncology
- Research experience and publication in endocrinology
- Have experience in the management of resources
- Able to take responsibility of service without direct supervision

**Desirable**

- Clinical audit experience

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for registration
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent
- MBBS/ BM/ MBChB or evidence of equivalent qualification

**Desirable**

- Higher research degree (MD, PhD, MD (Res))
- Established research interest
- Other qualifications which might enhance the provision of the service e.g. Teaching qualification, management qualification
