### Job overview

UCLH is seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant in Acute Medicine to provide vacancy cover for 12 months.

The acute medicine department is a lively and enjoyable place to work and thrives on a having a close knit team. Clinical work takes place across 3 areas; acute medical take, the acute medical unit (AMU) and the ambulatory care clinic. Our SDEC unit comprises both acute take and ambulatory Care. The successful applicants will undertake weekend cover for Acute Medicine and join the senior physician on call rota.

### Main duties of the job

The post holder will be working to provide efficient and safe care to patients within the Acute Medicine department. They are expected to contribute to timely discharges, complex discharge planning, adherence to best guidance regarding patients clerked by Acute medicine, and engage with good practice in admission avoidance by using appropriate SDEC pathways.

In Acute Medicine the post holder will be responsible to Palmira Mathurdas, Clinical Lead for Acute Medicine, and Tim Baruah, the Divisional Clinical Director for Acute Medicine Services.

A core team of Acute Physicians lead the department and deliver the following;

- AMU weekday cover
- AEC weekday cover
- Weekday ‘take’ cover
- Emergency floor acute medical cover at the weekend

This ‘core-team’ oversees training, clinical governance, audit, service development, quality improvement and acute medicine research for the acute medicine service, working with collaborating teams. They will also provide senior clinical leadership to our acute medicine digitization plans.

A group of Specialty Physicians contribute to weekday acute take cover and AMU cover at the weekend.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

### Clinical Skills

**Essential**

- Accurate diagnostic ability to an internationally recognised standard
- Evidence of working successfully in multidisciplinary teams
- Excellent written and verbal interpersonal & communication skills
- Evidence of good influencing skills
- A caring attitude towards patients and relatives

**Desirable**

- Involvement in professional activities external to the workplace
- Competence in an area of sub-specialty medicine

### Clinical Experience

**Essential**

- Evidence of substantial experience managing patients on an acute admissions ward
- Demonstrate the ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients
- Experience of working in an ambulatory care setting
- Evidence of continuing professional development

**Desirable**

- Experience at consultant level in an additional medical specialty

### Audit and Leadership

**Essential**

- An understanding of the principles of clinical governance and audit
- Good knowledge of the NHS plan and the possible implications for service development at UCLH
- Demonstrate a desire to develop a high quality acute medical service with the patient at the centre of care
- An understanding of integrated care and the potential roles of hospital and community
- Evidence of the ability to lead a team of people through complex change

**Desirable**

- Successful completion of quality improvement projects
- Representation on regional or national advisory bodies

### Research and Teaching

**Essential**

- Evidence of training in teaching methods and participation in teaching at different levels

**Desirable**

### Professional Qualifications

- Eligible for full GMC Registration
- MRCP or equivalent
- Within 6 months of attaining a CCST in either Acute Medicine or General Internal Medicine at date of interview

- MD/PhD or equivalent
- Postgraduate qualification in management or leadership
