NHS GRAMPIAN

LOCUM CONSULTANT ANAESTHETIST – 1 Year post

FULL TIME, FLEXIBLE OR PART-TIME APPOINTMENT

DR GRAY’S HOSPITAL

NHS Grampian is delighted at the prospect of recruiting a further Locum Consultant Anaesthetist to Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin. This full-time post (10 PA’s) will primarily be based at Dr Gray’s Hospital.   Specialist interest will be encouraged and there may be an opportunity, if appropriate, for interested and suitably qualified applicants to work at other hospitals within Grampian. Colleagues with an interest in Remote and Rural Anaesthesia practice within the North of Scotland, Highlands and Islands are also welcome to apply. Individualised Job Planning can be tailored to the requirements of the service and applicants.

Dr Gray’s Hospital is situated in Elgin, the county town of Moray in the North-East of Scotland. Inverness lies 35 miles to the West with Aberdeen 65 miles to the East. We are Scotland’s smallest District General Hospital. The Anaesthetic service is currently under full review in terms of staffing and function: work is underway to establish an expanded Consultant tier.

Full registration with a licence to practise with the GMC is required. (licence to practise must be in place prior to starting in post).  For more information visit www.gmc-uk.org

### Audit

**Essential**

- Evidence of involvement in clinical audit and service improvement.

**Desirable**

- Ability to plan and deliver service redesign/process improvement.

### Ability

**Essential**

- Knowledge and experience of a wide range of techniques in general and regional anaesthesia, including, advanced airway management, placement of arterial lines, central venous lines, spinal anaesthesia, epidural analgesia etc. Experience of stabilisation of critically ill adults and children.
- Ability to take full responsibility for independent management of patients.
- Experience of teaching and supervising the performance of clinical skills by trainees.

**Desirable**

- Teaching qualifications and previous experience teaching on courses.

### Research

**Essential**

- Evidence of previous research activity and presentations.

**Desirable**

- Involvement in ongoing research studies.
- Previous journal publications.
- Posters or oral presentation at national or international meetings.

### Experience

**Essential**

- Minimum of six years clinical anaesthesia, in fully recognised training posts.
- Ability to undertake the clinical work expected of a consultant anaesthetist in NHS practice in Scotland including full on-call emergency duties.
- Recent experience of inter-hospital transfer of critically ill patients.
- Current experience at consultant level in paediatric and obstetric anaesthesia.

**Desirable**

- Recent experience working in critical care.

- MBChB (or equivalent).
- FRCA (or equivalent).
- CCT in Anaesthesia (or equivalent); In some instances you may be able to work as a locum without CCT.
- GMC Registration.
- License to Practice.
- Be on, or be eligible for inclusion on within six months of interview, the GMC Specialist Register. In some instances you may be able to work as a locum without CCT.

**Desirable**

- Additional post-graduate qualifications e.g. MD/PhD/MSc.
- FICM (or equivalent).
- Additional sub-specialty training e.g. chronic pain.

### Management ability

**Essential**

- Sensitivity to management issues.
- Understanding of the organisation of the NHS.

**Desirable**

- Previous formal management/clinical leadership roles.

### Other requirements

**Essential**

- Sensitivity to professional issues, standards and ethics.
- Ability to communicate with clarity in written and spoken English.
- Ability to communicate, establish rapport and negotiate.
- Ability to produce legible notes.
- Enthusiasm for teaching medical students, trainees and non-medical staff.
- Visit to the Department of Anaesthesia at Dr Gray’s Hospital or in-depth knowledge of the unit prior to shortlisting.
