### Job overview

The Anaesthetics Department co-ordinates the provision of a comprehensive anaesthetic service and the recent expansion of surgical services has seen a rapid increase in the size of the department, with several new Consultant Anaesthetists and Specialty Doctors being appointed in the last 3 years.

The appointee will be supervised by a team of consultants providing anaesthetic support to a wide range of surgical specialties.

UHDB provides services for Trauma and Orthopaedics, ENT, Faciomaxillary Surgery, General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Urological Surgery, and Ophthalmic Surgery. There are 35 operating theatres including a busy purpose-built day case surgery department (Kings Treatment Centre). There is a 16-bedded level 2/3 Intensive Care Unit at the RDH site and a 16-bedded post-surgical step-down unit.

Consultants take an active interest in the education and training of junior staff. The examination record of the department is excellent, and Specialty Doctors are supported in their efforts to take exams.

The Regional Anaesthesia Fellow will play a pivotal role in advancing the department's commitment to excellence in regional anaesthetic practice and education. The position comprises predominantly clinical regional anaesthesia activity alongside active engagement in the department's regional anaesthesia teaching and course delivery programme. The fellow will also be encouraged to develop projects that align with their own professional interests and contribute to the wider regional anaesthesia community.

The Job plan comprising approximately 80% delivery of high-quality locoregional anaesthesia across orthopaedic, trauma, and rib fracture block services, and 20% contribution to the department’s regional anaesthesia teaching and course delivery programme. The fellow will also be resident on call as part of the anaesthetic

The appointee is expected to participate in a 1:8 prospective on-call rota, covering Theatres, Obstetrics, or Intensive Care.

There is a requirement to work across other UHDB sites should the need arise.

## Person Specification

### Clinical Knowledge & Skills

**Essential**

- Completed at least four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis).
- Evidence of competency in the provision of obstetric anaesthesia, demonstrating alignment with the obstetric anaesthesia capabilities as stipulated by the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
- Demonstrable interest in and commitment to regional anaesthesia practice.
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience

**Desirable**

- Training and experience approximating that required to enter UK Anaesthesia Specialty Training.
- Prior exposure to high-volume locoregional anaesthesia in an orthopaedic or trauma setting.
- Experience in ultrasound-guided regional anaesthetic techniques.
- Experience in regional anaesthesia for acute pain and rib fracture management.

### Qualifications & Eligibility

**Essential**

- MBBS / MBChB or equivalent
- Life Support Qualifications - ALS
- Evidence of competency in and enthusiasm for regional anaesthetic techniques
- Experience in teaching in the workplace and/or training environment
- Full GMC Registration with a license to practice at time of application

**Desirable**

- Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the specialty
- ESRA Diploma in Regional Anaesthesia (ESRA-DRA) or active candidacy
- Completion of a recognised regional anaesthesia course.
- Further postgraduate degree in education and/or simulation (e.g., postgraduate certificate in medical education)
- FRCA primary or equivalent

### Teaching Experience, Audit and Research

**Essential**

- Evidence and experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students
- Evidence of knowledge and experience of teaching clinical skills
- Evidence and ability to assess and apply evidence-based research into every day clinical practice

**Desirable**

- Any teaching courses or qualifications.
- Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to regional anaesthesia or Anaesthesia.
