A basic medical degree (MBChB), valid Advanced Life Support certificate and successful completion of foundation competencies by the date of application are essential. A minimum of 3 years' full time post graduate training at core level to achieve medical competencies (e.g. IMT or ACCS Acute Medicine or equivalent) is essential. At least 6 months experience of working in the NHS as a doctor in a substantive post and an active interest in oncology as a subspecialty are desirable.
The post does not award a National Training Number, as this post is not recognised as a ‘training post’. Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise by the date of application is required. If the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required.
Should further vacancies arise during the course of the recruitment process, shortlisted candidates may be considered.
Main duties of the job
Outpatient duties would include specialist clinics including the following: chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, new-patients and teaching clinics. Ward based duties would include supervision of patients receiving all types of modern cancer treatment, acute oncology patients and patients admitted for symptom control.
The appointee will join the hybrid on-call rota, which includes resident long day shifts incorporating overnight non-resident on-call cover. During on calls, appointees are exempt from their usual duties, but are expected to manage the emergency assessment unit and provide cover for the day unit and emergency ward cover, in conjunction with the on-call FY2/IMT doctor and supported by the on-call consultant. These arrangements give good exposure to acute oncology, which is part of the training curriculum for oncology. It is the responsibility of the appointee to ensure that when on-call he/she will be available to meet his/her clinical commitments. The appointee will also be expected to provide prospective cover for the annual and study leave of colleagues.
