### Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a paediatric junior sister/charge nurse to join our newly established dedicated Day Surgery Unit B42 (DSU). The unit opened in June 2023 and is now expanding its service to include children 2-18 years who require elective surgery.

As a band 6 nurse you will lead the team in providing excellent high standard care with our patients at the heart of what we do. You will have line management responsibility for a small team of paediatric nurses and provide teaching to the rest of the Day Surgery Unit team. You will have protected time for teaching and education.

We provide care to a large demographic and the service is ever growing to accommodate the ever-changing needs of our patients and families.

This will be a varied role and the post holder will be able to demonstrate collaborative working alongside a multi-disciplinary team across the surgical pathway and our children's Ward.

To work according to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines as a named nurse for a defined group of patients and take responsibility for:

- The assessment of care and health education needs
- The development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care including discharge planning for each patient.

To be designated to manage the ward/department and/or act as a deputy to the person holding continuing responsibility. To develop leadership skills and experience in the management of the ward/department.

- To maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within the framework of team nursing incorporating the Named Nurse initiative.
- To proactively co-ordinate the patients’ discharge arrangements in accordance with RUH Discharge Policy ensuring involvement of other agencies as necessary.
- To promote a patient focused approach to care in collaboration with all relevant health professionals.
- To educate patients and their carers as required where a need has been identified.
- To provide information thus enabling patients to make choices about adopting a healthier lifestyle.
- To ensure that all clinical documentation is completed correctly by members of the nursing team.
- To maintain a safe ward/department environment.
- To assist in the establishment and monitoring of protocols/care pathways.
- To promote and maintain effective communication within the ward/department, GPs and community staff and other hospitals with regard to ongoing patient care.
- To maintain patient confidentiality and ensure all staff understand the relevance of this.
- To supervise junior staff in the delivery of care, through effective monitoring, mentoring, clinical supervision and reflective practice.
- To provide emergency cover, where possible, within the unit.
