## Job Content

### Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Job Title: Junior Fellow in Cancer Care Start Date: ASAP Contract Type: Fixed term Duration: 6 months Purpose for Fixed Term: Maternity leave cover

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

### Main duties of the job

Are you interested in a career in cancer care? We may have an excellent opportunity for you.

Our previous Cancer Care Fellows have presented posters at international conferences, delivered major Quality Improvement and audit projects, and many have successfully progressed into CMT and ST3 training posts.

This post is appointed on a fixed-term basis for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While you will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum. There may be opportunity to tailor to fit the interests of yourself, including if you’re looking to pursue a career in oncology/haematology or if you have undertaken oncology/haematology training overseas or wish to obtain specific subspecialty experience.

These posts are designed to mirror the training programme of deanery appointed resident doctors, and opportunities for education and supervision will be identical, including allocation of an educational supervisor for the duration of the post.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The majority of your time will be spent caring for inpatients and patients on the day unit, and you will have opportunities to attend clinics or radiotherapy planning, and teaching sessions. You will be able to take part in the on-call rota at a level appropriate for your clinical experience and training. You will be able to benefit from opportunities to work with colleagues in our cancer sciences department and the new centre for cancer immunotherapy, our stereotactic radiotherapy service, and our bone marrow transplant unit. The Trust is one of the most research active acute trusts in the UK, and a major research centre for the University of Southampton, hosting a Cancer Research UK Centre and an Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre. We have a busy and successful department, and we are looking for doctors at “FY3”/CT1/CT2 to help run our service especially our wards and day units. We are offering a unique experience to come and work with us and gain experience in different specialties. We will work with you to design a rotation giving you varied clinical exposure.

For an overview of the position, please refer to the attached Job Description and Person Specification document. This includes a detailed breakdown of the key responsibilities, role expectations, and the qualifications we are looking for. It outlines the essential criteria for the role and is designed to support you in preparing your application by helping you evaluate how your skills, experience, and professional background align with the requirements of the role.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed fellow doctors and dentists. Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave.

Grades for Trust appointed fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay) Proposed interview date: TBC

This vacancy closes at midnight on 19th October 2026

### Applicant requirements

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service.
