This is a post within the Department of Paediatrics and Paediatric Neurosurgery at St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust, London.  The post holder will be expected to provide inpatient services on the paediatric surgical and neurosciences ward, working with children admitted electively and acutely for neurosurgical and neurology tertiary services, with occasional cover on medical wards.

To provide expert assistance to the Consultant Neurosurgeons, Paediatric Neurologists, Consultant Paediatricians and Specialist Registrars in the provision of a high quality service to patients in Neurosurgery and Neurology Department.  The post holders are expected to participate in all aspects of the patient pathway as appropriate and will be expected to perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge, working within the environments of the operating theatres, wards and outpatient clinics.

This Neurosciences SHO appointment is primarily to deliver care for paediatric neurosciences inpatients on the surgical ward, Nicholls ward.

Duties will involve daily assessment of the children, participating in neurosurgical and neurology consultant led ward rounds and working with the specialists to arrange investigations and treatment.

There are two other junior trainees at ST1-2 level primarily for surgical inpatients, and some responsibility for ward work will be divided between the team (eg help in prescribing IV fluids and medications) with cover for leave as needed.

The post holder will hand these children over to the paediatric on-call staff at the end of the working day.

There are no on call commitments.

## Person Specification

### Skills

**Essential**

- Phlebotomy, cannulation, lumbar puncture in neonates and children
- IT skills
- Competence in performing clinical audit, service improvement and guideline development

**Desirable**

- Previous experience of teaching clinical skills to others
- Enthusiasm to teach skills to others

### Personal

**Essential**

- Ability to work in a Multi disciplinary team

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Level 3 child safeguarding training
- Intermediate knowledge of general paediatrics and the assessment of children

**Desirable**

- Higher knowledge in paediatrics

### Experience

**Essential**

- Experience looking after neonates and children of all ages in ED & inpatients
- At least four years of post-graduate Paediatric experience including minimum of 12 months at registrar level in the UK.

**Desirable**

- Experience in a UK tertiary hospital
- Experience in a dedicated children’s ED

### Qualifications & Training

**Essential**

- Full registration with GMC
- MRCPCH
- Current APLS/EPALS/NLS

**Desirable**

- CCT
