### Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the day-to-day management of surgical inpatients, assist in outpatient clinics and operating theatres, and participate in the on-call rota. Responsibilities include assessing and treating patients, contributing to teaching and supervision of junior staff, and engaging in audit and quality improvement activities. The role requires adherence to Trust governance policies and General Medical Council standards, alongside maintaining professional development. Flexibility is essential to meet service needs while contributing to high-quality patient care and team objectives.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for:

- Day to day management of surgical inpatients.
- Assisting consultants in the outpatient clinics and operating theatres.
- Participation in the on call rota and to provide cover in exceptional circumstances for colleagues’ absence.
- Assessment, care and treatment of patients presenting to the specialty and referred to the speciality.
- Teaching and training staff in other medical disciplines and mentoring of more junior trainees.
- Participation in relevant audit and quality assurance processes.
- Abide by the Clinical & Corporate Governance policies of the Trust.
- To make sure that the guidance from the General Medical Council on Good Medical Practice is at the centre of your clinical practice.
- Keep clinical knowledge up to date by continuous medical education in the best interest of the patient.
- Seek regular feedback and follow an appraisal process with clinical and educational supervisors.
- Although a timetable will be provided, you will be expected to be flexible, in the interests of patient care and to meet the needs of the department as decided by the general manager and coordinating surgeon.
- To maintain the high standards of the department by contributing towards individual and team objectives as appropriate.

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Broad understanding of Surgery

**Desirable**

- Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements

### Experience

**Essential**

- Successful completion of FY2 year or equivalent

**Desirable**

- 12 months or more experience in General Surgery or Urology at FY2 level or higher

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Full Registration with GMC
- MBBS or equivalent

**Desirable**

- ALS
