Junior Charge Nurse Dermatology Outpatients, Band 6

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Junior Charge Nurse/Sister to join our dynamic and friendly team in a well- established department. To meet the ongoing demand on the service, this outpatients unit is open 7 days.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and well organised individual who has significant experience in Dermatology and would like to progress professionally within this specialty. The post holder will have excellent communication skills and will deputise for their manager co-ordinating the day to day clinical, managerial and educational requirements in the area, whilst delivering and overseeing high standards of specialist care to patients who attend our busy department with a wide range of Dermatological conditions. The post holder will require significant Dermatology experience and be responsible for delivering care in all areas of Dermatology Outpatients such as Day care / Phototherapy, assisting in theatre during minor operations and MOH’s, providing clinical knowledge and expertise to their team, whilst co-ordinating and delivering high quality care. You will act as a role model and support to the rest of the team using your own initiative and problem solving skills. You will need to be flexible and resilient in order to cope with the demands of the service.

### Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a clearly identifiable senior clinical and managerial staff member, and team leader. They will have significant experience and be responsible for delivering care in all areas of Dermatology Outpatients such as Day care / Phototherapy, assisting in theatre during minor operations, providing clinical knowledge and expertise to their team, whilst co-ordinating and delivering high quality care. They will be a role model and lead on specific projects / management functions as delegated by the Clinic Senior Sister or Matron. They will uphold the identified Trust values at all times.

In this role as Senior Sister/ Junior Charge Nurse, they will be the assigned deputy for their manager, co-ordinating the clinical, managerial and education requirements for the area on a day to day basis.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

- Phototherapy – will possess certificate of course attendance and be signed off as competent.
- Complex application of and co-ordination of Dermatological treatments including Day care treatments.
- Long term condition management including experience of providing holistic support to individuals living with chronic health care needs.
- Wound care and advice including suture removal.
- Administering medications including injections.
- Maintaining good time management and personal organisation.
- Providing cover for colleagues in all clinical areas as required.

Leadership and Management

- Manage the day to day staffing arrangements and rotas, to ensure safe levels of practice.
- Be a shift co-ordinator on a regular basis where appropriate.
- Ensure all staff are aware of and adhere to all trust Protocols of care
- Take continuing responsibility for the Ward / Department in absence of the manager.
- Lead and manage their own clinical team within general clinical areas, and of the total team in the absence of the manager, in line with Trust values.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- 18 months post registration experience at Band 5 level in area
- Wide variety of clinical experience in Dermatology Outpatients
- Experience in leading all or part of a clinical team in practice
- Able to deliver Phototherapy independently
- Complex application of and co-ordination of topical treatments
- Experience in wound care / dressings

**Desirable**

- Proven management experience
- Able to deliver Patch Testing within competency
- Able to deliver photodynamic therapy independently

### Personal qualities

**Essential**

- Able to motivate self and others and use own initiative
- Excellent time management and organisational skills and flexible approach to work and working patterns
- Excellent time management and organisational skills and ability to physically fulfil the role in every area of Dermatology Outpatients
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with patients , relatives, staff and external contacts

### Skills and Knowledge

- Proven clinical knowledge linked to area of specialty, and excellence in care delivery
- Proven knowledge of safety issues through clinical governance and risk management
- Proven leadership and deputising skills within the clinical area
- Clinical decision making skills and ability to prioritise workload
- Knowledge of current challenging and issues in nursing and ability to manage difficult situations
- Ability to work under pressure and autonomously as well as part of a team
- Excellent Interpersonal skills and IT literacy skills

**Desirable**

- Ability and knowledge in delivering Iontophoresis

- Experience of change management and budgets

### Education and Qualifications

**Essential**

- Registered Nurse (Adult or child as appropriate)
- Degree or working towards
- Post Registration qualification relevant to area of specialty or equivalent experience
- Teaching / mentorship qualification
