Infection Prevention Practitioners are key to the delivery of the infection prevention delivery plan, operational policy and annual programme of work, as well as the formulation, monitoring and implementation of associated policies, protocols and guidelines. They are also responsible for day-to-day surveillance, outbreak prevention and control and advice giving to a range of clinical and non-clinical services in the Trust.

The Infection Prevention team provides a 7-day service.

### Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be expected to participate in the delivery of a trust-wide delivery plan for the prevention and control of infection.

The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the formation, review and evaluation of the annual programme of work for infection prevention and control and the associated annual report.

Take responsibility for communicating developments, best practice and infection prevention priorities to a designated group of clinical and non-clinical areas and the whole multidisciplinary team.

Be expected to formulate, monitor, deliver and evaluate projects aimed at the achievement of local, regional and national priorities relating to infection prevention.

Be expected to scrutinise local and national surveillance data, guidance and expert opinion to identify areas for local improvement and to facilitate the implementation of related improvements to practice/the environment.

Be expected to maintain an advanced knowledge of infection prevention and control and, where appropriate, implement evidence-based practice (including in the development of Trust policies) and outbreak control measures.

Work flexibly to provide a 7-day service including bank holidays as agreed with the Matron Infection Prevention.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To enhance effective working relationships by developing and maintaining good communication and networks with all disciplines within the Trust and with external agencies.

To carry out other duties as required by the Matron Infection Prevention and the Infection Prevention and Control Group

Evidence Based Practice

- To review evidence to inform local policies and practices as directed by the Matron Infection Prevention.
- To use evidence to facilitate the on-going development of infection prevention practice within the Trust and designated areas of responsibility.
- To participate in research projects where appropriate.
- To actively seek opportunities to demonstrate evidence-based practice within the organisation.
- To act as a resource for infection prevention within the organisation.
- To provide timely and effective infection prevention advice on planning of new services, refurbishment projects, equipment and capital projects within the organisation.
- To provide expert infection prevention guidance on the development of new and revised tenders and contracts (e.g. laundry, sterile services).
- To provide expert guidance on bed utilisation to reduce the risk of spread of Healthcare Acquired Infections (HCAI).

Governance

- To assist in the development, implementation and review of a programme of clinical audit and surveillance relating to Infection Prevention.
- To devise, facilitate and monitor the implementation of action plans arising from audit and surveillance data.
- To assist clinical and non-clinical areas in risk assessment in relation to the reduction of healthcare acquired infection.
- To scrutinise data relating to incidents, complaints and other quality indicators for trends relating to infection prevention.
- To maintain an advanced knowledge of root cause analysis and provide advice on related action plans.
- To provide advice on complaints relating to HCAI.
- To follow the Trust Risk Management and Incident Reporting policies.
- To participate in a range of audits to provide assurance to the Trust that clinical and environmental standards are satisfactory (e.g. PLACE).

Education & Training

- To develop, facilitate, co-ordinate and evaluate infection prevention educational sessions and training opportunities within the organisation.
- To assist in the response to the outcome of training requirements in the organisation identified through training needs analysis, incidents and root cause analysis through the development of educational opportunities.
- To mentor new staff and those undertaking continuing professional development in liaison with the Matron Infection Prevention.
- To sensitively receive enquiries from the public on matters relating to infection prevention and control.
- To develop, facilitate and evaluate a system of Infection Prevention leads and champions in the Trust.
- To participate in regional and national initiatives, conferences, educational sessions and working groups where appropriate.

Management

- To effectively manage own time and projects to achieve optimum efficiency.
- To manage and develop the performance of the team.
- Act as a positive role model, creating a supportive ethos to empower staff to contribute to the delivery of the infection prevention annual work programme.
- Lead by example, develop self and other staff.
- Ensure IP staff take responsibility for their own judgements and actions and carry out those actions in a way that is agreed with the IP policies and procedures, professional bodies and the law.
- Lead the appraisal process ensuring that personal development plans are consistent with team objectives, succession planning and workforce development and in support of professional revalidation.
- Take all reasonable care of health and safety at work for self, team and others and to co-operate employers to ensure compliance with health and safety requirements.
- Support the learning and development of the IP team.
- Create a learning environment that ensures effective learning opportunities.
- Plan, monitor and evaluate ongoing mandatory training and relevant education and development opportunities for the IP team.
- Manage the team ensuring compliance by self and others with professional standards, legislation, national and organisational policies.
- Lead recruitment and selection process, attendance management and performance management ensuring grievance and disciplinary matters are identified, actioned and reported to the appropriate person.
- Lead the team utilising the appropriate Trust policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Ensure effective contribution to the IP delivery plan.
- Network with peers across professional groups promoting the exchange of knowledge, skills and resources.
- To act up in the absence of an IP Matron.
- Take a proactive approach to redesign of the IP team and processes linking to organisational priorities and in support of improved outcomes.
- Support the development and implementation of the Nursing Midwifery and Health visiting Strategy for the organisation.
- Seek opportunities for personal and team development supporting research agenda for the organisation.
- Develop and maintain a working knowledge of local, national and professional strategy and policy ensuring that organisational goals are reflected in personal objectives and development plans.
- Demonstrate the ability to contribute to policy and strategy development within the IP team
- Demonstrate by self and through team compliance to the pledges of the NHS Constitution 2012.
- To provide written reports relating to incidents and as requested by the Matron, DIPC, boards and committees.
- To develop and manage action plans and projects.
- To have an awareness of the Infection Prevention pay and non-pay budgets to assist with ensuring optimum efficiency and effectiveness.
- To participate in the development of relevant business cases and plans in liaison with the lead nurse or managers in the designated area of responsibility within the Trust.
- To participate and provide advice on developments within the Trust.
- Undertake staff reviews in line with Agenda for Change and the Knowledge Skills Framework as delegated by the Matron Infection Prevention.
- To attend delegated committees on behalf of the Infection Prevention Team (IPT) undertaking relevant actions and providing feedback to the team.
- To take an active role in Team meetings and development of the future direction of the Team.

Professional

- To represent the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust both in nursing and the specialist field of infection prevention at professional meetings and conferences.
- The post holder is expected to maintain their professional development in line with the Infection Prevention Society (IPS) Core Competencies for Infection Control.
- The post holder is expected to work flexibly across different sites.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

- Registered Healthcare Practitioner e.g. nurse, dental nurse, AHP
- Post registration education or experience at 1st Degree level
- Post-registration qualification in Infection Prevention & Control or willingness to undertake
- Teaching qualification or relevant experience
