### Job overview

A Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) is required at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) to work in specialist neurology services in a predominantly outpatient settings. The post is offered as a 2-year fixed term contract at 0.6 WTE (22.5 hours per week).   The post-holder will work with people presenting with a wide range of neurological conditions but will include those with ataxia, facial impairment and neuromuscular conditions. The work could include MDT clinics, 1:1 assessment and intervention, and groups.

With high levels of expertise in the service, it also offers specialist development and an excellent learning environment.  You will join a team of SLTs which has a well-established system for formal / informal support and clinical / professional supervision. ## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a relevant field post-registration, including 1 year at a specialist level
- Of working at a specialist level within adult neurology/ older people’s services/ Mental Health Care of Older People / dysphagia
- Of delivering and evaluating training to a range of audiences
- Of supervising SLT students
- Making accurate assessment of motor speech disorders
- Acquiring and interpreting videofluoroscopic swallowing assessment images

**Desirable**

- Carrying out evidence based/ research projects

### Personal Qualities

**Essential**

- Demonstration of effective management of change skills including the flexibility in approach to changes in patient and service needs
- Demonstrates knowledge of and commitment to the Equal Opportunities policy, Infection Control and Health and Safety Guidelines

### Skills & Abilities

**Essential**

- Excellent verbal and written skills
- Skills in delivering presentations and training including basic adaptations to presentation/ training style for a range of audiences
- Experience of approaches to mentoring, advising, supporting, and clinically supervising less experienced SLTs and support staff
- Demonstrates knowledge of RCSLT and HPCs code of ethics and professional conduct
- The ability to develop & implement short term clinically based projects
- Competent IT skills

### Knowledge & Qualifications

**Essential**

- Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
- HPC Licence to practice as SLT
- Registered member of RCSLT
- Member of Neurological CEN
- Successful completion of highly specialist post-graduate study relevant to communication (e.g., dysarthria, dyspraxia, dementia) and swallowing disorders (accredited dysphagia course) at MSc level or equivalent
- Basic counselling
- Training in SLT student clinical supervision

**Desirable**

- Evidence of working within the NHS

### Other requirements, including:

- Highly specialist lifting &/ or positioning of clients
