The Psychological Medicine, Older Adults and Neurodevelopmental services

(PMOA&NDS) directorate is pleased to advertise a Band 8a Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist post based primarily in Lewisham Memory service and providing clinical and supervisory input for all three SLaM Memory Services.

We will also consider applications from newly qualified and recently qualified Clinical Psychologists eligible to occupy the post at band 7 in a preceptorship role.

An applicant appointed to the band 7 preceptorship role will be supported through a preceptorship model that includes a professional and clinical development plan, and ring-fenced time and funding for continuing professional development training. A Preceptorship Clinical Psychologist will be supported to acquire the knowledge, skills and experience that meet the person specifications for the post at band 8a. Where these conditions are met the post holder will be expected to progress to band 8a subject to successful interview.

Please note candidates need to be qualified clinical psychologists (or about to qualify) and registered with the Health & Care Professions Council or clearly state in their application how they are planning to achieve this registration.

### Main duties of the job

The memory services provide assessment, diagnosis, treatment initiation and support planning for individuals presenting with memory problems consistent with a suspected dementia. While we work primarily with people over 65, we assess adult patients of any age and have access to specialist investigations as required. We serve diverse populations and work closely with primary care and voluntary sector agencies in the area.

As the clinical psychologist in the memory service:

- You will provide highly specialist neuropsychological and psychological assessments for individuals referred to SLaM memory services.

- You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary memory service team which will involve developing effective working relationships with GPs, other professionals and the families and carers of individuals referred to the service

- You will play a key role in delivering psychologically informed and culturally competent memory services

- You will supervise more junior staff from psychological professions

- You will initiate and evaluate service development and evaluation using appropriate methodology e.g. QI which you will share internally within SlaM and externally as presentations and publications.

Clinical and supervisory input will reach across the three memory services, and as such, some travel to the other memory service sites may be required.

The Southwark and Lambeth Memory Service is located at 151 Blackfriars Road (SE1 8EL).

The Croydon Memory Service is based at 122 Selhurst Road (SE25 6LL).

### Skills

**Essential**

- To communicate skilfully and sensitively complex and sensitive information with clients, carers and colleagues overcoming barriers to communication including sensory, and emotional difficulties, cultural differences and hostility to or rejection of information.
- To plan and schedule assessment and interventions for individual clients and groups and carers, and for meetings such as CPA and case reviews.
- To plan allocation of tasks to assistant psychologists.
- To be skilled in the administration of psychometric and neuropsychological tests, including those that require complex manipulation of test materials.
- Well-developed IT skills including entry and analysis of research data.
- Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate
- Ability to maintain concentration and to remain in restricted positions for long periods during observations, assessments and psychological interventions, and to deal with unexpected interruptions or changes during these.
- Ability to manage emotionally stressful situations such as working with victims of abuse or trauma, or with people who engage in disinhibited behaviour.
- Ability to manage verbal aggression and hostility directed at self.

**Desirable**

- Ability to communicate in a second language

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Theoretical knowledge of psychopathology and neuropathology of cognitive impairment and the evidence base for the relevant treatment and interventions.
- Knowledge of psychological assessment and clinical psychometrics.
- Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health issues, child and adult protection, and equalities
- Doctoral level knowledge of psychological research methodology and complex statistical analysis.
- Knowledge of factors affecting acceptability and accessibility of mental health care. To deliver psychological therapy across cultural and other differences.
- To select and administer specialist psychological assessments, interpreting and integrating complex data that require analysis, interpretation and comparison, drawn from several sources.

### Experience

**Essential**

- Experience of receiving clinical supervision across a range of client needs.
- Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients with a range of psychological needs of a complex nature
- Experience that supports working with, and addressing issues of, diversity within local communities.
- This may have been gained through work, research, volunteering and / or lived experience. Experience of developing and carrying out research projects.

**Desirable**

- Clinical training placement working with older people

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Entry-level qualification in Applied Clinical Psychology (Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or equivalent) that has been accepted by the HCPC for purposes of professional registration.
- Training in neuropsychological assessment either alongside or as part of applied psychology training evidence by a portfolio of supervised practice-based learning, and assessed by an experienced clinical supervisor to be of competence
