### Job overview

Our Highly Skilled Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist - Lower Limb will be a Specialist Orthopaedic Physiotherapist in lower limb MSK.

Your caseload will have a heavy bias towards the physiotherapeutic management of complex pathology. Includes analytical assessment, diagnosis, rehabilitation and management for complex lower limb orthopaedic patients referred by GPs, consultants and physiotherapists. Also Includes radiological and haematological requesting and interpretation (X-rays / USS/ MRI). Undertaking specialist clinic weekly for the management of complex lower limb pathologies.

Communication may well be challenging at times as patients being referred in will have generally already have engaged with MSK physiotherapy and failed to improve significantly, therefore through a combination of empathy and education, engagement will need to be sought.

### Main duties of the job

- to be the expert lead in the therapeutic management of lower limb MSK pathology
- to build strong links with Orthopaedic Colleagues - to input in pathway discussions.
- to build links with the council and commercial providers incorporating local gym spaces into usual care
- strong education role working with a team of 60 MSK physiotherapists and exercise instructors
- work along side Foot and Ankle consultants in elective clinics together with working within the hip/knee interface clinic

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- To be a Trust-wide advisor and source of expertise on all aspects of the management/rehabilitation of complex lower limb orthopaedic and musculoskeletal conditions to physiotherapists, patients, other health professionals, GPs and Consultants (orthopaedics and rheumatology).
- To be one of the lead clinicians for the South Devon wide musculoskeletal physiotherapy service reporting to the Lower limb physiotherapy lead providing a highly specialised clinical diagnosis and patient management service and to be responsible for staff clinical training and service development.
- To take a lead role in strategy, planning, development and management of the lower limb rehabilitation physiotherapy services for both adults and children
- To organise and lead the Musculoskeletal Clinical Interest Group for lower limb pathologies delivering training updates and hands on sessions for all MSK staff (50+).
- To make recommendations to physiotherapy manager regarding evidence-based developments to improve patient care and to participate in working parties and subgroups, developing service improvements within the speciality
- The Band 7 clinical lead for lower limb rehabilitation manages services, supports staff with clinical skills and service development, and inputs at a strategic level within the lower limb and wider MSK team. The band 7 will develop their own expertise to become the lead lower limb rehabilitation physiotherapist in the trust within MSK services. With their line manager the post holder will be required to undertake long term strategic planning of clinical rehabilitation areas within trust estates development. The post requires close working with the lower limb clinical specialist staff across the wider South West to ensure consistency of approach and delivery of commissioned service

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.

## Person Specification

### Experience and Knowledge

**Essential**

- 5 Years NHS Experience with at least 3 as a band 6
- Post graduate Lower Limb Education
- Evidence of delivering teaching with evidence of interest in Lower Limb Pathology

**Desirable**

- MSc or Equivalent level of relevant study
- Injection Therapy Qualified
- Evidence of service redesign/MDT working
