### Main duties of the job

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) brings an advanced Critical Care Team to the most seriously ill and injured patients across the region, giving them the best chance of survival and recovery. The service is delivered as a partnership between HIOWAA Charity and University Hospital Southampton.

As part of ongoing development, we are expanding our team of Critical Care Paramedics, aiming to recruit experienced clinicians who are committed to providing the highest standards of clinical care in challenging pre hospital circumstances. We are seeking applicants who will bring their experience and passion for pre-hospital care to our service. Initially based at our airbase in Thruxton, but at Southampton Airport from February 2026, the role is varied and  developmental, requiring our clinicians to be great team members and focused on delivering outstanding patient care.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To deliver specialised clinical practice within the field of pre-hospital emergency care, acting as a role model within the Critical Care Team

Practice as a solo Specialist Paramedic responder or in partnership with a HEMS doctor to deliver enhanced care to high acuity patients in the out-of-hospital setting.

Use collaborative and independent judgment to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement, manage and evaluate clinical care and management of patients attended to by the Critical Care Team.

Work within the multidisciplinary team to deliver clinical practice, clinical leadership and provide supervision, support, structured teaching and mentorship for multidisciplinary professionals, to facilitate ongoing education, training and development.

Support specific service development, including the implementation of multidisciplinary guidelines and protocols, incorporating current best evidence in consultation with medical and AHP staff for the care of pre-hospital emergency care patients.

Display responsibility for continuing professional development, supplemented by work based and service provided training.

Undertake active and positive engagement with all stakeholders involved with the HEMS Care Group, including improvement, education and clinical governance.

To work collaboratively with colleague from local ambulance services and the HIOWAA charity to foster partnership working and delivery of high quality services.

### Qualifications, knowledge and experience

**Essential**

- Very experienced blue light driver with UK Driving Licence with no more than 3 penalty points.  Level 3 CERAD Emergency Driving Qualification (or IHCD Emergency Driving qualification with willingness to undertake additional training)
- Significant experience in a pre-hospital emergency care setting.  Registered paramedic (HCPC) with no restrictions on practice. Successful completion of Postgraduate PGCert (or PGDip/MSc) in Advanced Clinical / Paramedic Practice or similar relevant Level 7 study
- The ability to listen to others, to appreciate a variety of opinions and the adapt to environments and situations in a responsible, controlled manner
- Demonstrable on scene and multi-agency management with the ability to manage busy complex situations and get the best of those involved
- Able to take responsibility and be a role model for others
- Able to take the lead as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and significant experience of providing clear purpose and direction on scene and within the team dynamic
- Able to dynamically risk assess and respond to unpredictable, highly dynamic clinical incidents, and provide concise, direct feedback during case discussions, hot debriefs etc
- Participation in Audit or Quality Improvement activities
- Demonstrable team membership attitude and aptitude for working in a very high performing team in pre-hospital environment.  Undertake training and display competency in the use of NVIS/NVG (Night Vision) equipment for night-time operations, as required
- Ability to prioritise workload and work under pressure
- Able to demonstrate direct, unambiguous but kind communication style
- Able to self-manage ensuring prompt start times, time focused prioritisation on shift and mindful of how personal actions affect the team dynamic
