### Job overview

Bay Tree is a 30 bedded surgical ward specialising in colorectal and general surgery.  Bay Tree is busy and care provision can be demanding but it also offers a wide scope of learning opportunities. Within the ward footprint, our team also looks after patients under multiple surgical specialities which includes orthopaedic, gynae and urology patients.

Our team is hard working, positive and friendly. We work together as a team and we pride ourselves on going that "extra mile" for our patients.

The post holder will be enthusiastic about delivering  high quality fundamental care to patients under the guidance of a Registered Practitioner in a caring, compassionate and sensitive manner.

- Acting always in the patient’s best interests
- Protecting and maintaining the patient’s privacy and dignity at all times
- Providing individualised care respecting personal beliefs and preferences
- Alerting the Registered Practitioner to any change or concern relating to the welfare of a patient in a timely manner

This role includes a mixture of night shifts, day shifts, and weekends to meet the needs of our service.

### Main duties of the job

Typical shift patterns are as follows:

- Shift hours are 07:30 - 20:00 and 19:30 - 08:00, across all seven days of the week (including bank holidays).
- Your daily duties will be performed under the supervision of our registered staff. The main duties may include:

- Personal care, food, personal hygiene and overall reassurance, comfort, and safety.

- Mobilisation of patients following correct manual handling techniques.

- Learn about individuals' specific needs and provide help in the   most appropriate way.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and enjoyable clinical environment to live and work in.
- Communicate with patients and their families.
- Manage stock levels for linen and other supplies.
- Contribute to the overall assessment of patients by measuring and recording height, weight, and body mass index (BMI).
- Assist with taking specimens from the patient for the ward or laboratory testing.
- Contribute to clear and concise paper and electronic patient documentation.

Applicants who do not meet the full criteria for appointment at Band 3 may be appointed at Band 2 and supported through a structured development programme including completion of required competencies and qualifications with progression to Band 3 subject to evidence of competence and service need.

## Person Specification

### Experience & Knowledge

**Essential**

- Experience caring for others or providing customer-focused services
- Experience of working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team

**Desirable**

- Experience of working as a Healthcare Assistant or in a similar care role
- Experience of caring for patients in an acute setting

### Key Skills & Abilities

**Essential**

- Ability to communicate clearly in English verbally, in writing, via IT and using the telephone
- Reliable punctual and flexible to meet service needs

### Education & Qualifications

**Essential**

- Maths and English skills equivalent to Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy
- Ability to complete written and electronic records accurately and undertake competency-based learning
- For Band 3 appointments: NVQ / QCF Level 3 in a health-related subject or demonstrable equivalent experience supported by completion of a competency-based clinical skills framework

**Desirable**

- Completion of the Care Certificate or equivalent experience
- NVQ / QCF Level 2 in a health-related subject or equivalent experience
