### Job overview

We are looking for a Healthcare Assistant with experience or an interest in Paediatric Haematology who is ready to complement our existing nursing team.

You will have the opportunity to work within our dynamic and friendly Haematology/Oncology and Paediatric Bone Marrow Unit. Grand Union is a 13-bedded acute paediatric haematology ward with four Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplant facilities and in addition a 2-bedded Apheresis Bay.

The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary team of skilled and highly motivated staff who provide high quality care to children with a variety of conditions including :

- Sickle Cell Anaemia 2.    Beta Thalassaemia 3.    Diamond Blackfan Anaemia 4.    Gene Therapy  5.    Bone Marrow Transplant 6.    Bone Marrow Failures 7.    Apheresis Programme 8.    Oncological Emergencies

### Main duties of the job

- To work as part of a team providing clinical care, stock maintenance and administrative support to Grand Union Ward under the supervision of a registered nurse.
- To carry out care and treatment tasks, delegated from professionally qualified nursing and medical staff, requiring a wide range of technical ability, numeracy and literacy skills as well as a significant level of interpersonal skills.
- To supervise less experienced staff in the clinical area, ensuring patient focused care is always delivered.
- To ensure the assigned clinical areas are tidy and ordered at all times and maintain the hygiene and cleanliness of the environment.
- To ensure that all necessary information is available for the service to operate effectively and to record clinical activity and outcomes using the appropriate hospital systems.

## Person Specification

### EDUCATION

**Essential**

- NVQ Level 3, Care Certificate or 12 months experience at Band 3 or equivalent.
- English Language GCE/GCSE or equivalent

### EXPERIENCE

**Essential**

- Knowledge of hospital administrative systems
- Experience in an acute clinical setting

### SKILLS/ABILITIES

**Essential**

- Skill in performing basic personal care duties and clinical observations and procedures
- The ability to use computers to enter and retrieve information
- Ability to train and induct new or temporary staff in the working processes of the department.
- Ability to participate in team meetings and make suggestions as appropriate for changes to working practice and procedures based on personal experience and observation.

**Desirable**

- Phlebotomy trained
