Permanent post

An exciting opportunity has arisen with NHS Western Isles, to join the Public Health Team as a Health Protection and Screening Clinical Specialist. You will be either a nurse or an allied health professional, and you will join a team of established and experienced colleagues. The post is permanent and it is based at the Health Board Office in Stornoway.

You will be responsible for handling health protection enquiries and situations both during working hours, and out of hours by supporting the on call rotation. The on call element is typically undertaken from home. The situations you will handle will vary from respiratory illnesses in health and care settings, to food borne infections and outbreaks on cruise ships visiting the Western Isles. You will also support the management of environmental hazards, such as water contamination. The work is exciting and varied, and there is considerable scope for learning and career advancement.

You will work with clinical and non-clinical colleagues internally and in partner organisations. These include environmental health officers, laboratory and pharmacy staff, infection prevention and control team members, and other healthcare professionals. You will also contribute to the development and oversight of screening and immunisation programmes in the Western Isles, and work with a range of stakeholders to maximise the uptake of screening and immunisations. You will line manage two staff within the smoking cessation service, which sits within the Public Health Team. Full training on the systems and processes required will be provided during induction.
