### Job overview

Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust are looking to appoint 2 new GPwER posts to work for one day a week in the breast unit. The successful candidates will become part of the team involved in the diagnosis of patients presenting with a new breast symptom (one-stop clinic).

There will be training and mentorship embedded within the role with scope for continuing professional development including exposure to interventional radiology and operating theatres. The post also involves important service development projects to align the breast unit with the needs of the local community. This includes setting up a breast pain pathway and developing a dedicated paediatric pathway to improve the experience of children and young people with breast problems.

GSTT is a world-renowned centre for cancer care, and the breast service is made up of a dedicated multi-disciplinary team who strive to provide exceptional and timely care for patients with breast cancer. The successful candidates will be a welcome addition to the team, bringing their knowledge and expertise into the hospital environment for the benefit of patients.

### Main duties of the job

- Following a period of training, the post holder is expected to see 12 new symptomatic ‘one-stop’ breast patients in a 4-hour session every week.
- The post holder will also be part of the team setting up 2 important service improvements, which involve community engagement. Namely, a breast pain (mastalgia) pathway and a paediatric service for children and young people with breast problems aged under 17.
- Ongoing mentorship and appraisal will be provided by the clinical lead (breast surgeon).
- There is scope for professional development including access to diagnostic and interventional radiology and theatre.
- There is scope to be involved in research and audit projects.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder will be responsible to Breast Clinic Lead Dr Karina Cox.

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of Breast services to the Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust to include:

(a) Diagnosis of patients in the breast unit at GSTT.

- The post holder must be medically /dentally qualified and maintain GMC or GDC specialist registration and hold a license to practice
- To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
- To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
- To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
- Where possible to collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust’s translational research portfolio, always meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.
- (b) Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients seen in clinic.
- To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas: Clinical efficiency, Quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programs and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively, operational efficiency.
- Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

### Clinical skills

**Essential**

- A team-based approach to care and service management, including appreciation of nursing and therapy roles.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively with colleagues; clinical and non-clinical, patients and their carers/relatives.

### Clinical Experiance

**Essential**

- Comprehensive clinical experience as a GP.
- Be actively working in general practice.
- Be registered on a performers list or equivalent.

### Audit Management & IT

**Essential**

- Track record of clinical governance, audit, management and IT skills required.
- Understanding of principles of audit.

### Professional qualification

**Essential**

- Eligible for full UK GMC registration and a Licence to Practice.
- Evidence of continuing professional / personal development.
- Evidence of annual appraisal.
- Provide evidence of completion of training (CCT) in general practice.

**Desirable**

- Other relevant postgraduate qualifications e.g MD; PhD; MS; MSc.

### Research. Teaching skill & experience

**Essential**

- Understands the principles of research within clinical practice and evidence-based medicine
