- To provide all medical aspects of pain management.

- Support the wider multidisciplinary team using our biopsychosocial approach.

- To work as an expert autonomous practitioner in an advanced clinical position.

- Responsible for triaging referrals and for advanced assessment including referral for appropriate investigations.

- To be able to diagnose, where possible, and plan further management of persistent pain.

- To be able to collaborate with colleagues in the MDT and within SFT to plan, deliver and evaluate all aspects of the patient journey.

- To be able to collaborate with external colleagues to plan shared care.

### Main duties of the job

- Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team

- Signpost to resources within Primary care and be a closer link between the team and primary care.

- Be accountable for all aspects of own work including the management of patients in your care and take referrals from GPs addressed to a Consultant.

- Outpatient clinics, with consultant supervision where appropriate

- Use highly complex analytical skills to interpret a variety of factors in a patient's presentation, including referral details, investigations and clinical findings.

- Decide management plan for patient to ensure the best outcome, whilst balancing the demands of the treatment on the patient, the preferences and complexities of the patient and Trust efficiency

- Work collaboratively with patients to agree management plans including resources within Pain Management and Primary Care.

- Keep patients, referrers and Primary Care practitioners informed of agreed plans, progress and future possibilities.

- Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out from time to time by the General Medical Council (GMC) and comply with the GMC’s guidance on ‘Good Medical Practice’.

- Attendance at regular MDT meetings.

- Clinical supervision and teaching of resident doctors in pain training.

- Potential to develop community-based clinics.

- Potential to train in and provide non-invasive pain management interventions

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communications

- Ensure excellent and clear documentation in patient records

- Effective communication with the MDT team and admin teams around the planning of clinical activity

Management & Service Development

- In conjunction with the Head of Service /Specialty Manager, Consultant and Senior colleagues, to play a full part in developing & implementing new ways of working in line with modernisation principles and fit for the future.

- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take responsibility for the best use of departmental staffing and other resources to ensure the maximum efficiency

Supervision

- The post holder will be allocated clinician supervision time, from a named consultant pain specialist.

Planning and organising

- Prioritise workload efficiently and safely

- Effective planning and organizing of patient treatments and diagnostic examinations

Responsibilities for Physical and / or Financial Resources

- Ensure use of consumables are available within the trust and procured via trust contracts

- Ensure any proposed new equipment trials, are taken through the appropriate governance process prior to use and that a full financial evaluation is included

- Contribute ideas and initiatives aimed at cost improvements within the service

Responsibility for Policy

- Ensure that any incidents are reported immediately to Clinical Governance in accordance with, for example, COSHH regulations, Health, and Safety at Work Act, and RIDDOR

- Ensure that all staff implement and adhere to all policies and standard operating procedures, which embed the safety of all patients and staff, including the adherence to NatSSIPS and LocSSIPS

- To adhere to policies and guidelines of the Trust

- To participate in relevant audit and quality assurance processes

- To attend M&M reviews and Departmental Governance meetings

Responsibilities for Human Resources and Leadership

- Maintain confidentiality of staff and patients

- Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written, and verbal, maintaining professional standards expected across all platforms of social media and IT usage

- Lead by example to ensure timely and effective communication with patients, staff, relatives, and carers in relation to care issues

- Responsible for providing leadership to relevant members of the clinical team

- Educational / Clinical supervisory duties as required by the role

Responsibilities for data and information resources

- To take part in the Information Management and Technology (IM&T) Strategy of the Trust and ensure handwritten and electronic patient records are stored securely and maintained for all aspects of patient care

- To complete relevant medical records as per policies and procedures using electronic systems

Physical Skills and Effort

- Requires technical skills to perform clinical procedures

- Appropriately use clinical equipment to carry out the job role

- Use of physical effort to carry out the demands of the job role

- To be able to receive and send emails and correctly and efficiently use all necessary Trust IT applications.

- Take all appropriate measures to protect oneself and others by wearing the appropriate level of PPE

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- Experience in the Assessment and Management of Persistent Pain Conditions
- Experience of teaching and a commitment to life-long learning and continued professional development

**Desirable**

- Formal qualifications in Pain Management
- Experience / interest in service modernisation and improvement
- Interest in Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching. Experience of teaching medical and other staff
- Post Graduate qualification in medical education

### Education and Qualifications

**Essential**

- Full registration with the General Medical Council
- Entry on the GMC GP Register
- MBBS or equivalent

### Research/Quality Improvement

**Essential**

- Familiar with quality improvement methodologies and/or research
- Active interest in research and commitment to clinical innovation

**Desirable**

- Participation in committee work, organising meetings, conferences, workshops
