Our JAG accredited Endoscopy Unit at the Chelsea Site is a rewarding place to work.  We are renowned for our friendly, innovative and supportive environment.

We provide a range of investigative and therapeutic endoscopy procedures in 4 modern, well equipped endoscopy rooms.  We run a 7-day service including out of hours support to the Gastroenterology team for UGI bleeds.

The postholder will have obtained a BSc in an appropriate science-related degree and have acquired training through the STP (Scientist Training Path). They will have gained training in different aspects of GI Physiology (hydrogen methane breath tests, anorectal physiology, capsule endoscopy, oesophageal manometry and impedance pH monitoring). They will work under the direction of the consultant gastroenterologists, working collaboratively with other members of the clinical team within the Trust’s policies and clinical guidelines.

We are looking for individual who is enthusiastic, confident and highly motivated with good communication skills.  The post holder must enjoy working in a fast-paced innovative team environment.

### Main duties of the job

The Physiologist will:

Provide high quality clinical care to patients, in line with the Trust values and in accordance with professional regulations.

Work in line with Trust policies, objectives, protocols and local guidelines, whilst also being aware of the importance of their role in supporting members of the team, and always adhering to the Trust values.

Work autonomously and with others to always deliver high standards of care to patients and their carers, autonomously and as part of a team.

Communicate in line with Trust values, to patients, carers and staff at all times.

Take every opportunity to continue to develop, practice and expand their own general.

Maintain high standards of professional and ethical responsibility, and accountability.

Provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the growth and further development of our Gastrointestinal Physiology service and to support the team of Gastroenterology doctors and wider multidisciplinary team therein.

The postholder will have obtained a BSc in an appropriate science-related degree and have acquired training through the STP (Scientist Training Path). They will have gained training in different aspects of GI Physiology (hydrogen methane breath tests, anorectal physiology, capsule endoscopy, oesophageal manometry and impedance pH monitoring).

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- There will be a number of clinical sessions initially starting with supplementing the current upper GI Physiology service.
- There is growing demand for this service with an active benign upper GI service supported by a team of eight luminal gastroenterologist and four upper GI surgeons. Secondary and tertiary referrals are received to the unit where procedures are performed including high resolution manometry/impedance manometry, ambulatory 24 hour pH monitoring and impedance-pH monitoring.
- The post-holder would also be expected to get involved with wireless pH monitoring, hydrogen methane breath testing, Urea breath testing and potentially the capsule endoscopy service.
- We have recently received funding to provide a lower GI physiology service which includes anorectal manometry and endoanal ultrasound.
- Work according to professional standards and guidelines of the Association Gastrointestinal Physiologist (AGIP)
- The candidate would assist in developing and initiating this service. The candidate is expected to carry out sessions independently and provide a high standard of clinical reports to sending to the referring clinicians/discussing at MDT’s.
- To supervise/assist in gastroenterological procedures, GI physiology investigations, food intolerance breath tests and capsule endoscopy
- To contribute to supporting colleagues to meet the 18 week pathway.
- To provide timely reports and communicate with GPs and other health professionals the outcome of clinical appointments in a timely fashion.
- To run twice monthly benign upper GI meetings, and weekly GI physiology meetings, contributing to the discussion and treatment planning/ referral decisions.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- Understand the national and local guidelines and procedures required to perform and prioritise clinical tests and demonstrate that they can carry these out to the required standards.
- Strong underpinning knowledge of Medical Physiology

### Skills and Knowledge

**Essential**

- Knowledge of medical procedures and terminology
- Verbal and written communication skills
- Commitment to CME and professional development.

### Education & Qualification

**Essential**

- Relevant Scientist degree in Clinical Physiology (GI Physiology) or equivalent experience
- Successful completion of the STP in GI Physiology
- Registered or working towards registration with the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS), Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP) or the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC)

**Desirable**

- Eligible (or about to imminently be eligible) for associate membership of the British Society of Gastroenterology compliant with the accreditation requirements of the Association of Gastrointestinal Physiologists (AGIP) as an independent practitioner in Gastrointestinal Physiology
