## Job Content

### Job overview

The University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) are looking to recruit a Locum Consultant Geriatrician to join our existing Department for Medicine of the Elderly (DME) team to cover a short-term gap until January 2027 only,  as we look to build on our recent expansion and successes - part time applications will be considered to enable us to get up to our required establishment.

The organisation was formed on 1st July 2018 to bring together our five Hospitals in Derby, Burton, Lichfield and Tamworth to provide the highest quality care to patients across southern Derbyshire and south east Staffordshire.

DME at UHDB has developed and expanded considerably over the past 5 years.  At the Royal Derby Hospital site there are 16 Consultants and 4 Acute Inpatient Geriatric Wards and at Queen’s Hospital, Burton we have 3 Consultants and 2 Acute Inpatient Geriatric Wards.

### Main duties of the job

The Derby based Parkinson's Team was awarded a National Parkinson Foundation Centre of Excellence status by the NPF in 2011 and following four yearly reviews is accredited until 2026 and is one of only two such centres in the UK. Our nationally recognized multidisciplinary movement disorder clinic is led by Dr Skelly and we are seeking to develop the service at Burton and we have a dedicated Senior Clinical Fellow for Parkinson's Disease.

The Department’s Academic Lead is Professor Adam Gordon, current President of the British Geriatrics Society.  Professor Gordon’s appointment has enhanced the varied research options within the Department and allowed us to establish a Geriatric Liaison service to provide in reach services throughout the Trust and specifically support to General Surgery and their emergency laparotomy patients in line with the NELA guidance. The Department is looking to expand these services over the next few years.

The Burton based team provide specialist clinics in falls, fracture prevention, syncope and orthogeriatrics.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Department is active in teaching both medical students and at postgraduate level. There is also a developing research program, alongside regular audits and a developing set of KPI’s. We are enthusiastic educators and enjoy supervising our junior colleagues and helping them to achieve their goals and guiding them successfully through their specialist training.

We are looking for a candidate who can build on the success of our services and help develop them further in the future as we strive to make care for the frail older patients better than ever.

Why UHDB? The Royal Derby Hospital is the region’s newest purpose-built acute hospital and has the East Midland’s only rooftop helipad. We are ranked in the top 20% of Acute Trusts in England for staff recommending us as a place to work and receive treatment. We know that staff satisfaction is inextricably linked to patient satisfaction and we recruit staff who subscribe to our values of compassion, attitude, respect and equality. By living our values we have a culture that puts patients at the heart of everything we do. The Trust is an Equal Opportunities employer and operates employee-friendly policies, including job share.

Derby and Burton offer the best of both worlds – cosmopolitan city life on the doorstep of stunning countryside.  UHDB will consider relocation expenses and enhanced Terms and Conditions on appointment, depending on previous experience.
