### Job overview

The Fetal Monitoring  Midwife provides expert clinical leadership in fetal surveillance and assessment to improve birth outcomes and reduce avoidable harm. The role focuses on embedding safe,  evidence-based practice in antenatal and intrapartum fetal monitoring across all maternity settings.

The post holder will spend approximately 80% of their time in clinical practice, providing visible  leadership, real time support, education, and assurance. As part of the senior midwifery team, the post holder will contribute to service development, safety culture, and CNST maternity safety action  compliance.

### Main duties of the job

The post holder will work daily on the antenatal, labour ward, maternity assessment unit (MAU) and the birth centre alongside clinical staff educating all levels of midwifery, obstetric staff and students about physiological CTG interpretation and intermittent auscultation.

They will contribute to the ongoing implementation and development of physiological cardiotocography (CTGs) interpretation working to develop staff awareness in recognising factors that could contribute to misinterpretation of CTGs and impair clinical decision making.

They will ensure staff are continually assessing fetal well-being in the context of the woman\`s health, pregnancy, gestational age, stage of labour, intrapartum risk factor and providing a safe, robust and consistent approach to fetal monitoring.

The role will support the delivery, monitoring, and improvement of CNST compliance, including:

Supporting staff education and competency in fetal surveillance and CTG interpretation Contributing to audit, review, and learning from incidents, themes, and outcomes relating to fetal wellbeing Supporting assurance processes by contributing to evidence required for CNST submissions Promoting adherence to mandatory training requirements and escalation pathways

The post holder will act as a clinical resource and role model, supporting staff confidence and competence, and working collaboratively with obstetric, anaesthetic, neonatal, and risk teams to improve safety and outcomes.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- Significant comprehensive midwifery experience
- Recent labour/antenatal ward/ triage experience
- Experience in all areas of midwifery with emphasis on recent intrapartum work

**Desirable**

- Ability to apply research to practice and to support changes in practice
- IT skills

### Knowledge and Skills

**Essential**

- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- Able to prioritise and meet deadlines
- Effective time management for self and others
- Knowledge of recent midwifery research and clinical audit
- Ability to practice within the scope of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
- Able to work autonomously or as part of a team
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to work calmly under pressure

- CQI foundation skills
- CQI Practitioner

### Education and Training

**Essential**

- Registered Midwife
- Degree level or equivalent experience
- Mentorship qualification
- Evidence of continuing professional development

- Master degree
- Evidence of physiological CTG interpretation masterclass
- NLS
- Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics Qualification.
