### Job overview

The Assisted Conception Unit at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital is seeking a full-time Laboratory Manager to oversee the day to day running of the laboratory and provide senior leadership to the embryology and andrology scientific staff.

The post holder will lead the operational delivery, governance, quality management and workforce planning of the Embryology, Andrology, Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) and Fertility Preservation services, ensuring compliance with HFEA, HTA and Trust requirements and driving continuous quality improvement through audit, benchmarking and service development.

### Main duties of the job

The post holder will lead monitoring and assurance of embryology laboratory performance through key performance indicators (KPIs), audit programmes, and continuous quality improvement initiatives. They will oversee performance monitoring, ensure compliance with HFEA requirements, and implement corrective and preventative actions to maintain high standards of safety, quality, effectiveness, and regulatory compliance. The role will support preparation for and participation in HFEA inspections, ensuring ongoing readiness and adherence to licence conditions and standards.

Working closely with the Principal Embryologist, the post holder will contribute to the strategic development of the fertility service, including service planning, transformation initiatives, and introduction of new technologies and laboratory practices. They will also contribute to business planning and service development proposals aimed at improving patient outcomes, efficiency, and service sustainability.

The post holder will maintain advanced clinical and technical competence in embryology, undertaking laboratory procedures for approximately 30% of their working time to ensure continued hands-on expertise and clinical credibility. As a member of the Embryology Senior Leadership Team, they will provide specialist advice to support strategic and operational decision-making and contribute to service planning, governance, audit, and risk management, ensuring safe, effective, and compliant service delivery.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- Proven Clinical Embryology experience
- Experience in team leadership and substantive experience working as a Senior Embryologist
- Experience of clinical risk management
- Extensive knowledge of reproductive medicine

**Desirable**

- Experience of business planning and preparing business cases for equipment or staff and establishing new services

### Education and Qualifications

**Essential**

- BSc/ Degree in Life Sciences
- Relevant higher degree
- Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- Familiar with HFEA Code of Practice
- ICSI practitioner

**Desirable**

- Certificate/Diploma in Clinical Embryology
- Evidence of having received professional training in communication skills and person management
- FRCPath by examination in reproductive medicine, or evidence of equivalent qualification, or evidence of experience and achievement at the similar level, or MD or PhD

### Skills / Knowledge / Ability

**Essential**

- Ability to troubleshoot laboratory problems in a logical and systematic manner
- Ability to set up appropriate quality control mechanisms in the laboratory
- Evidence of leading laboratory Governance including HFEA compliance including quality management and CAPA Improvement and Incident Investigations
- Demonstrate leadership and people management skills, including workforce planning and performance management
- Extensive knowledge of HFEA Code of Practice and other relevant legislation and clinical governance

**Desirable**

- Active nationally in the field and making contributions to organising bodies (e.g., BFS, ARCS, ESHRE)
- Experience of preparing HFEA/ HTA Inspections
