The preadmission service works with the anaesthetic team but also the multi-disciplinary team within the hospital and externally to ensure the child and family have the best care possible

A comprehensive preadmission service will be available for patients and their families who require an elective admission requiring a general anaesthetic to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Work in partnership with the child or young person and family and the multi-disciplinary team to deliver an effective and co-ordinated pathway for admission to BCH.

To participate in the development and management of the day-to-day delivery of the preadmission service for the trust.

To deliver safe, effective and high-quality care to the child, young person, and their family, ensuring they are prepared and fit for their admission and anaesthetic.

- Work autonomously in an allocated clinic using clinical assessment skills to ensure the child or young person is fit for their admission and anaesthetic.
- Plan, implement and evaluate care in relation to the needs of children and their families and the implications of admission to hospital.
- Identifying any issues that may prevent the admission to hospital and help resolve as appropriate.
- Work effectively as part of the multi-professional team, using different communication skills.

## Person Specification

### QUALIFICATIONS

**Essential**

- NMC Registered Nurse (Child)
- Evidence of recent and on-going professional development

**Desirable**

- Paediatric assessment clinical skills
- Mentoring and assessing in clinical practice

### ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENT SKILLS

**Essential**

- Able to think quickly in a rapidly changing acute environment.
- Be able to analyse, evaluate and reflect on different situations.

### KNOWLEDGE & NATURE OF EXPERIENCE

**Essential**

- Experience of working in an acute paediatric healthcare setting in the last 2 years
- At least 12 months Paediatric Surgical care experience with a knowledge of the pre and post-operative process
- Knowledge of safeguarding & confidentiality issues

**Desirable**

- Demonstrate clinical competence in an agreed number of competencies.
- Experience in Preadmission Service

### PERSONAL SKILLS / ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES

**Essential**

- Able to plan and prioritise daily workload to ensure high quality and safe care for children and young people.
- Able to work well independently and as part of a team
- Able to work flexibly to meet service including weekend working.

### PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE

**Essential**

- Able to engage with IT programmes that support patient care
- Able to communicate effectively via email and other virtual aids.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Good time management skills
- Able to utilise resources effectively. Ability to work with more junior staff and provide a learning and supportive environment. Be involved in Appraisals for more junior staff.
