### Job overview

To provide high-quality, evidence-based, family-centred nursing care to infants, children and young people requiring enhanced care within a Paediatric High Dependency Unit (HDU) / Level II Critical Care environment.

The post holder will work as an experienced Band 5 practitioner, demonstrating a high level of clinical competence, professional accountability and confidence in caring for children with complex and acute healthcare needs. They will contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care, working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and effective patient outcomes.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

### Main duties of the job

- Provide safe, effective and compassionate nursing care to children requiring Level II critical care / HDU support.
- Undertake comprehensive assessment of the acutely unwell or deteriorating child and recognise changes in clinical condition promptly.
- Demonstrate competence in the management of children requiring enhanced respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological monitoring and support.

Together they will ensure you receive the support you require throughout the recruitment process as well as overseeing your training and induction requirements to enable you to carry out your role.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
- Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team.
- A competent practitioner, supervising/providing mentorship to a small number of learners or junior staff.
- Responsible for co-ordination and clinical assessment of a group of patients, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated, involving patients and carers.
- Participate in observations of care, audit and development of service to improve quality of care.
- Demonstrate technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient care management including; patient observations; equipment management and administration of agreed invasive tests/procedures.
- Utilise and ensure others utilise information and IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data.
- Manage expected clinical events/enquiries, requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort, ensuring referral to a senior member of staff where appropriate e.g., in an unexpected event.
- Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g. imparting bad news or following an unexpected event.
- Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
- Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.

- Study at level 6 (Diploma/Degree)
- First level degree or willingness to undertake.
- Completion of Preceptorship Programme.
- Teaching and Assessing qualification.

**Desirable**

- - Evidence of continuous professional development.
- HDU Qualification or willingness to undertake
- Completion on European Advanced Life Support (EPALS) training, or willingness to undertake
