### Job overview

The post holder will be a midwife practicing autonomously to attend women presenting for caesarean section and other pregnancy related theatre procedures.

The post holder will be a prime care provider to mothers and their families when they present for elective caesarean sections/ pregnancy related theatre procedures, working collaboratively with the theatre team. They will work as a member of a team providing maternity care to women within the hospital. The post holder will take charge of the elective caesarean section list with continuing responsibility in the absence of the senior midwife.

The post holder will have responsibility for coordinating the elective caesarean section list. This will include checking investigation results are ready before the start of the list and coordinating with the Theatre Lead and Labour Ward coordinators to facilitate the effective running of the theatre list.

The post holder will have daily responsibility for ongoing review of the planned elective activity, working collaboratively with the Maternity Outpatient Manager and Obstetric colleagues and reallocating women as indicated by the activity in the Unit and clinical indication for elective caesarean section.

### Main duties of the job

Communication and Relationship Skill

- Act as a woman’s advocate in promoting, and delivering the highest standard of midwifery care, ensuring all fundamentals of care and current, relevant policies and procedures are adhered to.
- Communicate all relevant information to the multi-disciplinary team internally and with external organizations as required to ensure seamless care Attend departmental and directorate meetings as required, to ensure an awareness of developments within the area of midwifery practice.
- Assist in maintaining an effective communication network; written, verbal and electronic, informing senior staff of all matters outside your role/sphere of competence; cascadinginformation to more junior staff.
- Develops and maintain communication with people about difficult matters or difficult situations, in an appropriate, supportive and empathic manner.
- Act as shift coordinator; escalate according to policy ensuring the appropriate delegation of women’s care and workload.Responsible for ensuring that the team are performing the highest standards of care and that effective patient flow is being maintained
- Assist in maintaining an effective communication network; both written and verbal, informing senior staff of all matters outside your role/sphere of competence.

- Ensure knowledge base is evidence based and contemporary

- Ensure practice meets the requirements of a practicing midwife in accordance with NMC requirements
- Ensure all records and documentation including electronic records are accurate legible and completed in a timely manner
- Undertake immediate assessment and determine priority of women within any setting.
- Act as woman’s advocate in promoting, and delivering the highest standard of midwifery care, ensuring all fundamentals of care are addressed, and current, relevant policies andprocedures are adhered to.

- Worked in a variety of settings utilising all midwifery skills

- Understanding of Children’s Act
- Has been involved in midwifery related research
- Appreciation of counselling skills
- More than 12 months experience post midwifery qualification

### Skills and Abilities

**Essential**

- Effective communicator both written and verbal
- Practice as an autonomous midwife in the acute and primary care setting
- Ability to think logically, prioritise and use initiative
- Demonstrate good organisation skills

**Desirable**

- Motivated to develop clinical skills
- NVQ Mentor/Assessor Training
- Examination and assessment of the newborn
- Within 12 months of qualifying as a midwife be able to: cannulation, perineal suturing, scrub for LSCS & Administer intravenous medicines.

### Education/Qualifications

- Registered Midwife
- Evidence of professional development.

**Desirable**

- Relevant Degree
- Assessor/mentorship course or equivalent
- Documented evidence of further studies: personal portfolio

### Knowledge and Understanding

- Awareness and understanding of current national and local midwifery issues
- Ability to make appropriate clinical decisions in the light of research evidence, informed choice and individual circumstances
- Understanding child protection
- Awareness of risk management

**Desirable**

- Understand systems of team approach in midwifery
