We are offering an exciting opportunity for Dosimetrist Healthcare Scientist to join our team in a forward thinking radiotherapy physics department at the Velindre Cancer Service in Cardiff.

- Undertaking measurements on Linear Accelerators
- Measurements on patients
- Maintaining dosimeters
- Brachytherapy support
- Treatment Planning support

### Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to undertake post-graduate development to enable registration on the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) or equivalent, if required. Support will be provided across all relevant aspects of the syllabus.

There will be some flexible hours of working and as the Centre provides a wider service, work may be required in the associated hospitals in the locality.

Medical Physics provides all the background scientific and technical data, advice and expertise to the radiotherapy departments for the treatment machines, simulators, computer systems and specialized devices. This is fundamental for patient doses to be prescribed and given correctly, safe operation and staff protection from X-Rays. It includes specifications for the equipment, their calibration and QA, repair & maintenance, data networking and computer control, and individualized patient dose computations. Its constituent sections include machine maintenance & mechanical engineering, brachytherapy, computing & electronics, treatment planning, dosimetry, training & teaching, and R&D. There is also a full Radiation Protection service to all X-Ray users in SE Wales.

### Applicant requirements

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.

### Qualifications or Knowledge

**Essential**

- Undergraduate degree in physics, clinical technology, computer science, radiography science, computing or equivalent qualification
- Competence in mathematics (especially mental arithmetic)
- Accuracy and attention to detail. Basic IT and spreadsheets.
- Proven communication skills both verbal and written, especially with people of other disciplines who have a barrier to technical understanding.
- Ability to visualise 3D models both conceptually and on computer screen
- Theoretical knowledge of the physics behind the treatment
- Good knowledge of routine methods of treatment for RT including use of the Linac

**Desirable**

- Previous training in relevant aspects relating to the dosimetrist role
- Knowledge of the requirements of other disciplines (e.g. Oncology; radiobiology; Mould Room; Simulator etc.).
- Anatomy & Physiology (especially cross-sectional images).
