An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and highly motivated leader to join Aneurin Bevan University Health Board as Directorate Manager within the Division of Surgery, initially supporting Trauma & Orthopaedics, with the opportunity to support other Directorates across the Division in the future.

This pivotal senior leadership role sits within one of the Health Board’s largest, most complex and highly visible surgical specialties, supporting both 24/7 trauma services and planned elective care. Working closely with the Clinical Director, and wider multidisciplinary teams, you will provide strategic and operational leadership across a service that is critical to urgent and planned patient pathways.

You will be responsible for the safe, effective and efficient delivery of services, balancing the demands of trauma activity with elective recovery, access improvement and waiting time reduction. Operating within a fast-paced environment, you will lead operational performance, workforce planning, financial management, governance, service improvement and transformation.

Trauma & Orthopaedics is a highly visible and influential role, requiring a confident and credible leader who can build strong relationships across clinical and corporate teams and support sustainable improvements in quality, productivity and patient outcomes.

### Main duties of the job

The Directorate Manager will provide senior operational leadership for the Trauma & Orthopaedic Directorate, ensuring high-quality, patient-centred services aligned to Health Board and Divisional objectives. Working closely with the Clinical Director, clinical leadership team, senior nursing team and General Management Team, the post holder will provide strategic direction, governance oversight and day-to-day operational management within a complex and highly visible specialty.

The role will support safe, efficient and effective service delivery through strong performance management, workforce planning, financial stewardship, risk management and resource utilisation. The successful candidate will provide visible and inclusive leadership, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement and professional excellence.

The post holder will lead service transformation and modernisation, contribute to strategic planning, develop business cases and support sustainable service models that improve patient outcomes and operational performance. They will also represent the Directorate at Divisional, Health Board and external forums, contributing to the wider development of surgical services across Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

This is a fixed term/secondment post for 18 months from the start date to cover a secondment. If you are interested in applying for the secondment position, you must obtain permission from your current line manager prior to applying for this post.

In conjunction with the Clinical Directors, direct, lead and motivate the relevant Directorates, ensuring a high standard of professionalism, efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of services and that activity is fully aligned to the business of the HB, and is in line with local and national policy.

To promote good communication with the Clinical Directors and Senior Nurse for the Directorates and to promote effective communication within this Management Team to ensure clear and effective leadership for the Directorates.

To exercise judgment involving highly complex data and situations which require the analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options in order to ensure the effective daily management of the Directorates.

To work closely with the Divisional management Team, Clinical Directors, Senior Nurses and Service Managers in the development of strategic and operational plans for the relevant services. To formulate and contribute to long term strategic plans which involve uncertainty, and may impact on the entire organisation and to ensure that they fit within the ABUHB’s strategic plans and local and national policy.

### Applicant requirements

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.

Welsh language skills are desirable
