This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and skilled finance professional to join our Income team as a Directorate Accountant. As a large tertiary centre, Newcastle Hospitals delivers a wide range of highly specialised, specialised and core services—creating a complex income landscape where you can develop expertise and make a real impact.

Working within a large and complex NHS organisation, you will play a key role in delivering a high-quality income accounting service, supporting the Trust’s c.£1.7bn income plan. You will lead on monthly income reporting and contract monitoring, turning data into clear, accurate insight to support operational and strategic decision-making.

You will lead the day-to-day running of the Income team, support and develop staff, and build strong, trusted relationships with financial and operational colleagues. You’ll contribute to income planning, forecasting and contract negotiations, helping to maximise income and strengthen financial performance.

We are looking for someone with strong technical accounting skills, experience in a complex organisation, and the ability to interpret and communicate complex financial information. Knowledge of the NHS finance regime and income systems (e.g. SLAM) would be advantageous.

### Main duties of the job

The successful postholder will support the Income and Cost Accountant in all aspects of Income:

- Lead and manage a small team, supporting performance, development and workload planning
- Oversee month-end and year-end processes, ensuring accurate and timely income reporting
- Produce and review financial and activity reports, including contract monitoring and key reconciliations
- Support the preparation of forecasts, budgets and the annual income plan
- Provide expert advice to corporate and operational stakeholders, identifying risks and opportunities
- Liaise with external organisations to resolve income queries, support contract management and improve cash flow
- Contribute to the development and improvement of income processes, systems and reporting
- Support Trust-wide financial initiatives and respond to national policy and income guidance
- Ensure strong financial controls and data quality across income systems and reporting
- Deputise for the Income and Cost Accountant as required

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- To ensure the provision of a delivery of a high-quality Income Accounting service
- Produce accurate, timely and appropriate monthly financial and performance management information for the Income/Contracts department
- Production of monthly activity and finance performance information (Contract Monitoring) to ensure produced to the highest quality by actively contributing to the quality assurance process and producing key validations and reconciliations
- To take a lead role in supporting the Income Accountant in the annual development of the Trust Income plan of c£1.7bn including supporting the production of a complex financial model using the Trust’s income reporting software (SLAM), to support the Trust’s annual objectives
- Contribute to statutory and mandatory reporting requirements, ensuring adherence to Trust policies, governance guidelines, and national standards
- Support the Income and Cost Accountant to negotiate with NHS/external organisations over invoicing/income issues, effectively resolving disputes to facilitate payment and improve cash-flow
- Support the continued development of the finance function in response to national policy drivers e.g. Healthcare funding, overseas visitors, counting and coding requirements etc
- Liaison with the internal and external auditors to address queries raised and issues identified
- Support the maximisation of Trust Income, through effective planning, forecasting and negotiation of activity plans, prices and contract terms
- Proactively contribute to the planning, development and implementation of Financial and Operational IT systems, e.g. Civica suite of products, Ledger systems etc. Including leading on the implementation of the Trust chosen Income System, SLAM
- Maintain financial and information systems to ensure the regular provision of accurate healthcare income and activity information to inform Trust wide and Divisional decision making in the most efficient and effective way whilst ensuring due regard is given to the implications for both upstream and downstream systems
- Constantly review systems, processes and controls to ensure they are fit for purposes, identifying areas of potential risk and taking an active role in developing rectification plans
- Facilitate service line reporting by identifying income, presenting it at the patient level, and integrating it into the reporting framework to ensure comprehensive and accurate financial analysis
- Co-ordination of finance staff in the Income team on specific projects for which they lead, providing technical/specialist training and appropriate delegation of work to staff
- Lead on the smooth day-to-day running of the Income Team acting as a line of enquiry for staff within the team
- Lead on the training, development and performance of the staff within the team
- Lead on other projects or initiatives that affect the income position of the Trust on an ad hoc basis
- To deputise for the Income and Cost Accountant as when required

### Skills & Abilities

**Essential**

- Able to work autonomously to agreed objectives whilst given the freedom to instigate changes, whilst working within broad occupational policies, acting without reference to manager
- Ability to make judgements involving highly complex facts and situations
- Able to communicate complex, sensitive or contentious information to a range of different audiences using a range of different communication methods
- Good planning and organisation skills are essential

### Knowledge & Experience

**Essential**

- Substantial experience in the finance department of a complex organisation
- In depth specialist and practical knowledge of the NHS Finance Regime and in particular NHS Payment Scheme (NHSPS), previously known as Payment by Results (PbR)
- In depth specialist and practical knowledge of income reporting and forecasting
- A good working knowledge of financial computer systems
- Must have staff management experience and the ability to plan and organise a range of complex activities and programmes
- Evidence of participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

**Desirable**

- Previous NHS finance experience at a senior level
- Previous experience of implementing SLAM
- Presentation skills/experience of public speaking
- Experience of report writing

### Qualifications & Education

**Essential**

- A good level of education in a numerate subject
- Professional accountancy qualification or equivalent knowledge, experience and expertise
