### Job overview

A11R is a 26-bedded respiratory ward managing a wide range of patients, from those requiring acute care to palliative support,  and  in between. Our patient group is diverse, including young asthmatic patients, individuals experiencing COPD exacerbations, and patients living with lung cancer.

Our Acute Lung Unit bay holds two BiPAP/CPAP/Nasal High Flow beds and two step-down beds. With this, we offer comprehensive acute training and competency programmes in the three areas, alongside training on chest drains.  Other training on acute skills such as ABG, CVAD and Tracheostomy care is also provided to help staff develop confidence and proficiencies managing complex patients. Ongoing support is provided by the senior ward staff, Practice Educator and the Critical Care Outreach team.

Our team is as diverse as out patients, ranging from newly qualified  to experienced staff, all working within a supportive nature.  We  work closely with speciality teams’ including DAIRS, Palliative Care and the Lung Care Nurses, leading to potential career development in respiratory.

As part of the UHD transformation programme, inpatient respiratory services will be moving to the COAST building, scheduled to open in early 2027. This development will include two new respiratory wards, one of which being a High Care Unit, creating exciting new learning and development opportunities for staff.

Based at : Royal Bournemouth Hospital

### Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the co-ordination of flow, patient safety and staff on the ward.

You will be able to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and skills including being proficient in extended clinical roles expected in the care of the acute patient.  As the Deputy Clinical Leader it is expected that you can make justified decisions in the absence of the Clinical Leader, and partake in holding the medical bleep, including bed meetings and safe staffing.

You will need to be able to work well under pressure and build strong and effective communication links with the Clinical Site Team, Acute Medical Unit, Emergency Department, Management and the Multi-Disciplinary Teams, including the management and escalation of the 'Stranded Patient'.

You will organise and be responsible for staff appraisals, training, support and development for staff on the ward.

Additionally, you will be responsible for addressing and resolving complaints, sickness management and adverse incidents.

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Demonstrate knowledge of clinical audit and clinical effectiveness
- Ability to demonstrate fundamental nursing knowledge and practical skills

- LERN/RCA training and proficiency

- Knowledge of budget management

### Experience

- Demonstrable experience within acute medicine

### Qualifications

- 2 years post qualifying experience
