An exciting opportunity has arisen within  the ORST Care Group (Oral Surgery, Oral Diagnosis, Radiography, Special Care Dentistry and Dental Theatres) and applications are invited for the role of  Band 6 Dental Theatre Nurse. This is a permanent part time post and open to those who fulfil the person specification.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, professional individual with excellent clinical and communication skills and the ability to provide a clear focus for clinical and managerial leadership across the department. The candidate will work closely with the  Unit Manager AND Dental Theatre Team to ensure the efficient running of the department.

### Main duties of the job

To maintain awareness of, and comply with appropriate Registered body Trust policies, procedures and guidelines.   To demonstrate evidence of on-going specialist professional development via a personal professional portfolio and the NHS knowledge and skills frame work.  Works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team.  To provide support and knowledge to patients within the speciality. Acts as a role model, demonstrating effective organisational, clinical and leadership skills.

Maintain patient confidentiality and record keeping.

Demonstrate a knowledge of good I.T skills and record keeping.

Maintain professional standards and adhere to the Trust and departmental dress code policy.  The post will require the practitioner to be able to demonstrate the ability to work autonomously.   The practitioner is competent to deliver expert, skilled care in a specialised area within the dental hospital i.e. patients undergoing dental procedures under general anaesthesia.   Promote best practice through participation in clinical audit and implementation of evidence  based practice.

Maintain and ensuring high standards of Infection Prevention and Control procedures throughout the Care Group.

Securing and assuring the highest standards of clinical care by providing leadership to nursing and support staff.

To assist the theatre team in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.

Take responsibility for ordering and maintenance of stock levels, of specialist items and resources in the department.

Assist in the smooth running of theatre lists by sending for patients as required, and escorting patients from theatre to the recovery area, with the appropriate handover.

Support patients/ families/ staff effectively communicating sensitive, confidential information using a variety of communication skills such as empathy, negotiation and reassurance.

To contribute to the annual strategy and business plan.

To co-operate to provide nursing cover across the hospital ensuring staffing levels and skill mix are based on clinical need.

To manage non staff resources in the department, ensuring value for money and appropriate and efficient usage.

To ensure staff support systems are in place liaising with Occupational Health and HR when necessary.

To be involved in the recruitment and retention of staff, and contribute to induction processes. To carry out appraisals and performance review of all nursing staff.

To work together with the Clinical Support Managers and the Assistant Director of Nursing to ensure all staff undertake continuing clinical and professional development and comply with mandatory training requirements.

To encourage leadership and supervisory development, promoting these skills within the workplace including the development of action learning sets.

To contribute to the creation of a continuous learning environment to support all staff, both qualified and trainees.

Work with the clinical team to ensure clinical governance is an active process within the departments.

To adhere to Trust protocols, procedures, guidelines and policies for all nursing staff within the department.

To continually update your knowledge base so that nursing procedures are based on clinical need.

To be involved in disciplinary procedures as necessary with the Assistant Director of Nursing  and Clinical Support Managers, in accordance with the Trust’s disciplinary  procedures.

## Person Specification

### Skills

**Essential**

- Ability to communicate effectively with staff at all levels and with patients
- Evidence of good managerial skills
- Competent Dental Nursing skills that can be demonstrated in all departments
- Ability to plan work, motivate staff and delegate effectively

### Knowledge

**Desirable**

- Up to date knowledge of the NHS as it relates to dentistry
- Knowledge of Undergraduate and Postgraduate education within a Dental Hospital

### Experience

**Essential**

- Considerable experience in a senior post in a hospital, community, or GDP setting

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- NEBDN Dental Nurse Qualification OR Equivalent GDC recognised Dental Nurse qualification
- Educated to GCSE/O level standard or equivalent
- Currently registered with the General Dental Council (GDC)
- Evidence of CPD/Further study
- Further qualifications in Sedation, Oral Health, Radiography or Orthodontic Dental Nursing
