### Job summary

We are delighted to be in a position of being able to recruit a Counsellor within our established and innovative Children and Young Peoples Mental Health Service within Gateshead.

We are looking for an individual who has the ability to both deliver high quality interventions and help develop the skills and knowledge of universal practitioners in children and young peoples mental health.

The skilled individuals will join one of the multi-disciplinary team in the delivery of interventions that identify mental health difficulties at the earliest stage, and facilitate the provision of services that promote resilience, and enable positive mental health.

### Main duties of the job

The main purpose of the role is to work as a member of Gatesheads Getting Help Children and Young Peoples Mental Health Service, mental health assessment and interventions to Children and Young People.

This includes the direct provision of evidence based, outcome focused standards of care to children, young people and families.

We expect the post holder to have sound children and young peoples mental health knowledge and skills.

You will have the aptitude, motivation and enthusiasm for working within a groundbreaking service.

You must have:

- An accredited Counselling qualification and accreditation to a Counselling professional body (e.g. BACP or UKCP).
- Evidence of relevant continuous professional development.
- At least 2 years experience of working with children and young people in the role of a counsellor.
- Sound knowledge of children and young peoples mental health issues.
- A good working knowledge and experience of Safeguarding.
- Efficient and effective maintenance of administrative systems and procedures.
- Experience of working with children and young people in a mental health setting.
- Experience of multi-agency working.
- Good knowledge and understanding of schools and education systems.
- Commitment to extending knowledge, personal and professional development of self and others.

### Job responsibilities

To provide a getting help community based child and adolescent mental health counselling service to children, young people and their families. To offer counselling support for mild to moderate mental health needs that cannot be met by universal or early intervention services.

The role of the CYPMHS Counsellor includes working in partnership with existing services, including:

- Universal Services including; Education, Voluntary, Public and Health sectors.

- Getting help services such as Education Psychology, Sexual Health, Family Intervention Team, Adult Mental Health and Drug and Alcohol Prevention.

- Getting more help services - for instance Children and Young Peoples Mental Health Service.

The Team aims to deliver early and preventative mental health intervention for children, young people and their families by:

- Providing individual and group work using brief therapeutic tools and models

- Contributing to development of clear referral pathways that support the emotional health and wellbeing of children young people and their families

- Providing education and raising awareness of childrens emotional and mental health issues to key stakeholders

- Involving children, young people and their families in reviewing current service provision and delivery

- Identifying children who are at risk of developing mental health issues and in doing so ascertaining the needs of children and young people.

- Identify how coping strategies for children, young people and their families, who are considered to be at risk can be implemented

### Experience

- At least 2 years experience of working with Children and Young People in the role of a counsellor
