This is an established post at Springfield Hospital, in Tooting, London SW17. This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic and dynamic consultant psychiatrist to join this friendly ward team. Lavender Ward was originally situated in Queen Mary’s Hospital Roehampton, but moved to Springfield in June 2023, as part of the Trust’s estates modernisation plan, which has resulted in all of the adult acute inpatient wards being only on 2 hospital sites instead of 3. Both sites, at Springfield and Tolworth Hospitals, are undergoing extensive new building and refurbishment works. ### Main duties of the job South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust has a rich history, well-established community links and an international reputation. We provide a full range of local mental health services to the Kingston, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth London boroughs, as well as specialist forensic mental health services, including specialised services such as national deaf adults and CAMHS inpatients and OCD. We are committed to providing high quality integrated health and social care for local people with mental health problems in South West London and more specialist mental health services for people throughout the UK. The Care Quality Commission already rates our services as ‘good’ however we aim to be ‘outstanding’. ### Detailed job description and main responsibilities Detailed job description and main responsibilities - To manage, appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed between consultant colleagues and the medical director and in accordance with the Trust’s personnel policies and procedures. - To ensure that junior medical staff working with the post holder operate within the parameters of the New Deal and are Working Time Directive compliant. - To undertake the administrative duties and record keeping associated with the care of patients. - To participate in service and business planning activity for the Ward and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service. - To carry a mobile smart phone during working hours provided and paid for by the Trust and be contactable by members of the team and other colleagues by phone and email. - To work flexibly and creatively as part of a multidisciplinary team promoting informed risk taking and anti-discriminatory practice. - To communicate clearly and effectively with staff of all major disciplines concerned with provision of mental health care. - To participate in annual appraisal for consultants. - To attend and participate in the academic programme of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme. - To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12(2)/AC approval, and to abide by professional codes of conduct. - To participate annually in a job plan review with the clinical manager (ACD), which will include consultation, in order to ensure that the post is developed to take into account changes in service configuration and delivery associated with modernisation. - To work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services and share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management. - To comply with the Trust’s agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions, and to take an active role in the financial management of the service and support the medical director and other managers in preparing plans for services. ### Applicant requirements You must have appropriate UK professional registration. This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service. ## Person Specification ### TEACHING: **Essential** - Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatry **Desirable** - Teaching Qualification Evidence of feedback good from students ### Qualifications **Essential** - Primary Medical degree. - Full GMC registration - Included on the GMC Specialist Register or eligible for such inclusion on the Specialist Registrar within three months of completing their CCT. - Section 12 (2) approval of the Mental Health Act - Approved Clinician (AC) status **Desirable** - MRCPsych, or equivalent. Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry - CCT in General Adult Psychiatry. - Qualification in a talking therapy such as CBT, DBT or MBT - Qualifications in change management and service development skills - Other higher degrees or further training relevant to the post. ### AUDIT AND MANAGEMENT: **Essential** - Engage in continuing professional development, and join a Peer Group to gain approval for CPD done. - Commitment to developing practice through clinical audit, quality improvement, and working with colleagues in the liaison psychiatry team, the acute trust, and managers.
