### Job overview

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust are looking to appoint a Consultant general Paediatrician with an interest in Neonates and neonatal developmental assessment to deliver a combined neonatal and general paediatric service and manage a clinical caseload both in- and out-patient.

This is a replacement post.

The post holder will have responsibility to deliver and manage a Level 2 NNU service. The Neonatal Consultant team work a 6-week rolling rota. This includes a service week for the Level 2 Neonatal Unit (NNU). As part of the NNU week, the consultant also directly supervises the teaching and training programme.

The other 5 weeks are dedicated to outpatient clinics, SPA activity, specialty service, annual and study leave. A morning a week during the other 5 weeks provides cover for the Paediatric Assessment Unit and in reach to Paeds ED. The on-call commitment is 1 in 6 weekdays and 1 in 6 weekends.

During clinic weeks it is anticipated that the post holder will perform 2 clinics per week.

### Main duties of the job

- Together with the other paediatricians, to provide a service for children on the QEH site in neonatal paediatrics and acute general paediatrics. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department as per the job plan.
- Shared responsibility with the other Paediatricians for providing 24-hour, 7 day a week cover for the Local neonatal unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleague’s periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
- To take responsibility for patients on the local neonatal unit on the relevant service weeks, liaise with nursing staff and the wider multidisciplinary team e.g. labour ward.
- To be responsible with his/her colleagues for seeing babies and infants requiring neurodevelopmental follow up in the children’s outpatients clinic, helping the children / young people and their families with education and support both in clinic and outside clinic and in providing any necessary advice to general paediatric and neonatal colleagues.
- To be aware of and deal with safeguarding issues as required and to manage patients with advice from the safeguarding team.
- Carry out outpatient duties with appropriate administration and patient follow up.

- Be aware of and assist in divisional objectives through clinical work e.g. Electronic discharges within 24 hours, DNA rates, infection control.
- Standard operating procedure of consultant responsibilities is currently being finalised.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

## Person Specification

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Medical degree, MBBS or equivalent
- MRCP/MRCPCH or equivalent
- Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
- Applicants that are UK trained, must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
- Applicants that are non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT and be on the GMC Specialist Register. Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR) applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application.
- NLS, APLS/EPLS provider status (up to date).
- Valid BLS Training
- Child Protection/Safeguarding training (minimum Level 3) up to date

**Desirable**

- Experience demonstrating an interest in neonatology
- Experience demonstrating an interest in neonatal / paediatric neurodevelopment
- Training in neonatal / paediatric neurodevelopment.

### clinical Audit

**Essential**

- Experience running a quality improvement project.
- Shows an understanding of clinical governance, patient safety and corporate risk.
- Understanding of NHS systems and audit processes
- Evidence of service improvement projects and audits

**Desirable**

- Quality improvement project relating to neonatology / General Paediatrics.
- Evidence of involvement and /or experience in risk processes such as Serious Incident reviews and patient safety systems

### Clinical Experience

**Essential**

- Experience and training equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Paediatrics.
- Recent experience/familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices.
- Experience in managing children in the acute ward (NICU and general), ambulatory and outpatient setting
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on and manage a range of problems in the acute Paediatric setting, including safeguarding issues.
- Ability to deal with complex clinical situations in the core areas of the post.

**Desirable**

- Experience working independently at Consultant Level.
- Broad experience of working within the NHS
- Experience in Performing Neurodevelopmental assessments using standard tools.

### Teaching Experience

**Essential**

- Experience and interest in undergraduate teaching
- Skill and ability in formal and informal teaching for both under/ postgraduate students and nursing/midwifery staff
- Educational supervision accreditation
- Experience of supervising junior doctors at all grades.

**Desirable**

- Previous experience in trainee Supervision
- Higher teaching qualification

### Management And Administrative Experience

**Essential**

- Understands the management structure of the NHS Evidence of risk management.
- Ability to manage and lead a multidisciplinary team.
- Appropriate understanding of NHS directives regarding consultant clinical practice including clinical governance. Ability to prioritise administrative tasks and to work co-operatively with administrative and clerical staff.

**Desirable**

- Training/experience in NHS management.
- Experience in managing and leading specialist unit, directorate teams and working parties as appropriate.
