### Job overview

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Consultant colleague to the department of Ophthalmology which sits within the Digestive diseases and Surgery Clinical Service Unit (CSU). The post holder will be expected to have a broad experience of the specialty, particularly Cornea and Anterior Segment

Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC at the time of application, fit to practice and able to demonstrate that they have the required broad-based training, experience and knowledge for the post.

### Main duties of the job

This post covers all aspects of a Consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, service development, education and managerial responsibilities.

The successful candidate should have the ability to offer expert clinical opinion and management on a wide range of problems, both emergency and elective, within the subspecialty and general ophthalmology, at a consultant level.  A commitment to the Trust’s clinical governance and risk strategy is mandatory.

The successful applicant is expected to:  Provide expert medical and surgical management of patients with corneal and external eye conditions, such as keratoconus, corneal dystrophies, microbial keratitis, ocular surface inflammation, dry eye disease, etc. The successful candidate will have continuing responsibility for patients under their care and be able to autonomously manage corneal patients presenting within the service.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Be competent and experienced in performing full thickness and lamellar corneal transplant surgery including endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK , DMEK, DALK). The post holder will also oversee the keratoconus cross linking service.  Able to perform other corneal surgeries such as pterygium surgery, etc. and complex cataract surgery.  Participate in general ophthalmology clinics, theatre lists and emergency eye care on a shared rota basis.  The service is supported by a team of optometrists who work autonomously and provide a virtual test-only component of the keratoconus service.

- Evidence of completing an approved period of training/subspecialist clinical experience in Cornea and Anterior Segment

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- MBChB or equivalent / MRCP or FRCS of equivalent to specialty (UK) or equivalent / Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) or equivalent / CCT or within 6 months of AAC date / On Specialist Register with GMC and continue to hold a licence to practice
