### Job summary

Applications are invited for a Consultant Neurologist post across South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. Successful candidates will have CCT or equivalent and be on the GMCs Specialist Register for Neurology when they take up the post (applications are welcome from those within 6 to 8 months of their CCT date). 2 x 10 PA posts are available, however LTFT applications will be considered.

We are seeking a motivated, dynamic and supportive individual who possesses strong leadership and communication skills to join our team in developing neurology services for our patients. Successful candidates will join a team of seven consultant neurologists and a wider multi-professional team delivering care to meet the needs of our local population.

The Neurology service provides sub-speciality care across a range of clinical pathways including PD, Headache, MS, Epilepsy and Neuro-Ophthalmology as well as General Neurology. We also deliver an in-house Neurophysiology service and Neurological Rehabilitation service.

Applications are welcomed from individuals who wish to pursue and develop their area of practice in the future. The posts include job planed time to attend weekly clinical and educational meetings.

### Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be expected to coordinate and deliver the strategic and operational aspects of the Neurology services across the STSFT reflecting national and local priorities.

There is currently no out of hours on call commitment associated with this post, although the team provide acute neurology consultant cover on a weekly rota basis.

All applicants must participate in an agreed share of the rota.

Clinical

Provision and delivery of consultant support for patients requiring neurology inpatient and outpatient care.

Provision of assessment and triage of patients and advice and guidance following internal and external referral.

Ability to facilitate discussions and/or onward referrals for patients with neurological related problems requiring input and/or specialist care.

Support outpatient services such as General and Sub-Speciality Neurology OP clinics across both sites / where needed.

Actively participate in Neurology MDT and any other clinical meetings deemed essential to patient care.

Administrative

Participate in local and national audit activities relevant to neurology.

Attendance at clinical governance activities / meetings.

Act as an educational and clinical supervisor for junior medical staff, PAMs, nurses and AHPs in training.

Research

Participate in existing clinical trials and research within the service.

### Job responsibilities

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty
- Experience with clinical audit and understanding of clinical governance.
- Have experience in training / teaching under graduates and postgraduates.
- Experience of supervising junior medical staff.

**Desirable**

- Evidence of experience in the specialty.
- Have spent a period of training in research in a discipline appropriate to their intended practice.
- Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals.
- Evidence of leadership / project management.
- Evidence of having implemented change.
- Evidence of having changed practice as a result of audit.
- Evidence of having revisited the audit to assess improvement.
- Have received further speciality training in Neurology and General Medicine to a level equivalent to Calman Level III
- Publications within the last three years.

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Possess MRCP
- MBBS or other recognised equivalent medical qualification.
- Have spent either 3 years in Higher Training (or equivalent) or 5 years as a Specialist Registrar (or equivalent)
- Hold a CCT and or be on the GMCs Specialist Register, or be within 6-9 months of being admitted to the GMCs Specialist Register

**Desirable**

- Have been involved in academic research as part of their training and have both presented and published peer reviewed articles.
- Special skills training in the specialty.
- Subspecialty Skills in Epilepsy / General Neurology
- Postgraduate qualification in medical education
- Have obtained a higher degree by thesis (MD, MCh, MSc)
