An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and forward-thinking Consultant Microbiologist/ Consultant Clinical Scientist to join the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, on a permanent contract. The post will include scope to involved in the procurement of new equipment and the development of new services to benefit patients within the Tameside and Glossop locality.

Situated just eight miles east of vibrant Manchester, and serving a dynamic population of approximately 250,000, our hospital offers the perfect blend of accessibility to central Manchester and the breath-taking Peak District. Whether you crave peaceful countryside walks or the pulsating energy of a bustling city nightlife, Tameside ICFT puts it all within your easy reach.

Our modern laboratory is fully computerised, with electronic connecting with wards and local GPs for requesting and delivering results. . All of our microbiology analysis is currently provided by the Manchester Foundation Trust via a service level agreement. Analysis of IDPS and a range of other virology assays, are carried out in house using Beckman Coulter DxI 800 analysers.

### Main duties of the job

- Telephone liaison and ward/department visits to discuss individual clinical cases and infection prevention and control issues within the hospital

- 2.          To offer consultant clinical expertise and advice to hospital clinicians, general practitioners and external users of the Microbiology service. 3.          The post holder will interpret highly complex clinical and pathological data and be responsible for the clinical authorisation of laboratory reports. 4.    To be responsible for the creation, implementation and review of evidence based clinical guidelines in conjunction with other consultant colleagues and clinical users. 5.    To participate in ward rounds and clinical discussion meetings as required, giving advice on selection, availability and interpretation of Microbiology results. 6.         The appointee will be expected to provide laboratory liaison, expert microbiological and infection control advice and antimicrobial stewardship for patients, including clinical reviews as part of ward rounds. 7.          To contribute to the strategic planning of the Department of Blood Sciences and the Directorate of Laboratory Medicine.

**Essential**

- To have knowledge of  managerial processes  within the Trust and  NHS.
- Good awareness of  Trust Policies and  procedures and how they  relate to the staff and  service of the  department.

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- To have a thorough  knowledge of medical Microbiology  including  metabolic processes,  physiology,  pharmacology and drug  interference.
- To have a sound basic  knowledge in other areas  of Pathology.
- To have an extensive  knowledge of routine  and specialised analytical  methods, quality  assurance and problem  solving.
- Able to perform risk  assessments on a variety  of laboratory situations.
- Fully conversant with  COSHH regulations and  their application to  laboratories.
- Able to perform clinical  risk assessments and  resolve problems or  investigate complaints  relating to the service as  part of Clinical  Governance.
- Extensive knowledge of  national professional and  NHS guidelines relating  to service provision and  quality.
- Knowledge of resource  allocations and  procurement.

### Experience

**Essential**

- To have completed a  minimum of 2 years in  post as a Registered  Clinical Scientist of at a Principal level (8b)level  or higher

**Desirable**

- To have attained  status as a  national or  international  expert or adviser.
- To have developed  an expertise in one  or more  specialised  analytical or  clinical areas to a  point of acting at  an expert level  within the Trust.
- To have attained a  good record of  achievement in  research,  development and  audit activities,  through  presentations at  national or  international  conferences and publication in peer  reviewed journals.

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- First Degree or assessed  equivalent of knowledge  and  expertise.
- Master’s Degree or  assessed  equivalent level of  knowledge and  expertise in medical Microbiology.
- Fellow of Royal College  of  Pathologists (FRCPath) as  required for Medical  Consultant.
- Demonstration of  Continuing  Professional  Development at  agreed level of  participation.
- Registration as a clinical  scientist  with Health and Care  Professions  Council (HCPC).

**Desirable**

- PhD
