East Cheshire NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Upper Gastro‑Intestinal Surgery (Benign Conditions) to join the General Surgery team at Macclesfield District General Hospital. This permanent opportunity offers the chance to contribute to the ongoing development of Upper GI and General Surgery services within a supportive and progressive department.

The successful candidate will be an experienced Upper GI Surgeon with an interest in benign upper GI and hiatal surgery, strong laparoscopic general surgery skills, and a commitment to delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care. Enthusiasm for teaching, training, and service development is essential.

The General Surgery department provides comprehensive elective and emergency care, supported by a 1 in 6 emergency general surgery on‑call rota and a 24/7 middle‑grade tier. The multidisciplinary team includes Surgical Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Colorectal Nurse Specialists, and robust nursing and administrative support.

The hospital offers excellent facilities, including endoscopy, CT, MRI, and interventional radiology, and has a strong education and training ethos. This role offers the opportunity to join a Trust committed to clinical leadership, innovation, and continuous improvement, with access to shared office accommodation and dedicated secretarial support.

Hours per week:  11.80 PAs

### Main duties of the job

The key responsibilities of the role include:

- Provide consultant‑level care for patients with benign upper gastrointestinal conditions, including hiatal and laparoscopic upper GI surgery.
- Deliver high‑quality elective and emergency general surgical care, participating in the 1 in 6 emergency general surgery on‑call rota.
- Undertake outpatient clinics, operating lists, endoscopy sessions, and inpatient ward rounds.
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, including Surgical Advanced Clinical Practitioners, nurse specialists, anaesthetists, and allied health professionals.
- Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of Upper GI and General Surgery services, supporting Trust strategic objectives.
- Participate in teaching, training, and supervision of doctors in training, foundation doctors, and Surgical Care Practitioners.
- Support clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives within the department.
- Take part in service leadership and management activities, working closely with Clinical Leads and Directorate colleagues.
- Maintain professional development in line with GMC requirements, appraisal, and revalidation processes.
- Applicants must hold CCT or equivalent and must be on the General Medical Council Specialist Register (or will attain within six months of interview date).

## Person Specification

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Full GMC registration
- An appropriate higher surgical qualification
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent
- On the Specialist Register for the above or within 6 months of being admitted to the Register by the AAC date.
- Applicants must have full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview).
- UK trained applicants are required to be a Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
- Applicants are required to be on the Specialist Register or due to obtain their CCT within 6 months of interview. CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation of successful application.

- Relevant higher degree

### Clinical Experience

**Essential**

- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in General Surgery
- Broad range of recent experience and expertise in general & laparoscopic surgery
- Experience of Laparoscopic Day Surgery
- Ability to deal with a broad range of emergency admissions
- Able to perform upper & lower GI endoscopy with a caecal intubation rate of greater than 90%)
