This department is fully committed to teaching and training both undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors. We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic substantive Consultant with general Obstetrics & Gynaecology interests, to add to the existing number of substantive Consultants at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital. This post is an integral part of the quality care in our high activity obstetric unit, supporting Obstetricians, midwives and operational team in real time clinical decision making and ensuring robust care in all areas of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. This post will be part of a friendly, dynamic and enthusiastic team of Consultants delivering safe and effective care for Obstetrics and Gynaecology patients from Bedfordshire and Luton. The Hospital has always been renowned for its friendly atmosphere and good working Luton and Dunstable Hospital is located within easy access to central London and the Midlands. London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes’ drive from the hospital. Rural areas include attractive villages and towns nearby including St Albans and Harpenden, which have excellent schools.

### Main duties of the job

Expectations: * Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the care of all patients presenting to the hospital * To share with colleagues, the management of Obstetric and Gynaecological patients requiring admission * Teaching and training of intermediate grade and junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students * To undertake duties as defined within the agreed job plan * To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit * To have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD) * To participate in on-call rota providing specialist and timely advice

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Be responsible for the provision of acute Obstetrics and Gynaecology services within Luton & Dunstable Hospital * Provide acute services in the following areas of clinical care including Triage & Day Assessment Unit when on delivery suite duties. * Provide antenatal clinic services running a general or special interest clinic dependant on the skills and expertise of the candidate. * Provide acute gynaecology services, when needed, to help meet clinical operational standards * Provide caesarean section list, at least once a month and according to the needs of the service, teaching and training the Specialty Registrars and other resident doctors. * Strive to continuously develop services for obstetrics that are of a consistent high quality for the whole of the patient pathway.

* Provide optimum care, which is based on best clinical practise, in order to achieve the best possible outcomes for pregnant women. * So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties, the appointee undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues * Consultants should not be on duty for the labour ward whilst being timetabled for other clinical duties, such as antenatal or gynaecology clinics doing private practice

### Teaching

**Essential**

- Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students
- Understands learner centred teaching

**Desirable**

- Has attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course

### Registration

**Essential**

- Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice (GMC licence to practice is mandatory
- ATSM (SITM) Benign Gynaecology Registration Clinical Experience before employment commences)
- Specialist Registration in Obstetrics & Gynaecology or eligibility to enter it within 6 months from the time of the interview
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register:
- CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview)
- CESR - portfolio pathway (must be on Specialist Register at time of applying)

### Qualification

**Essential**

- MBBS or equivalent qualification
- MRCOG or equivalent
- ATSM (SITM) in Advanced Labour ward practice or equivalent.

**Desirable**

- A post graduate qualification MSc, MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research
- ATSM (SITM) Benign Gynaecology
- ATSM Subfertility and reproductive medicine

### Clinical Experience

**Essential**

- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience in High Risk Obstetrics and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems.
- Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering a service without direct supervision
- Obstetrics & Gynaecological Surgery including minimal access surgery

**Desirable**

- Experience of Maternal Medicine / Risk & Governance
- High risk Obstetric care in a Tertiary Unit

### Clinical Effectiveness

**Essential**

- Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD
- Experience of guideline appraisal
- Participation in relevant local audits
- Ability to interpret and apply clinical research
- An interest which improves the Obstetrics and Gynaecology pathway in all aspects

**Desirable**

- Participation in relevant national audits

- Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for purposes of on-call emergencies
