## Job Content

### Job overview

We are looking for two enthusiastic colleagues to join our dynamic service at Newham University Hospital, within Barts Health NHS Trust.

Newham University Hospital (NUH) is a district general hospital with a major undergraduate teaching role, serving one of the youngest and most ethnically diverse populations in the UK. The hospital sits within a multicultural borough with a population of 355 000, with an average age of 32 years and a high prevalence of diabetes (8.5%). The service benefits from a purpose built diabetes centre located in East Ham with diabetes outpatient facilities co located with the community Type 2 Diabetes Specialist Nurse service provided by the East London Foundation Trust and onsite podiatry and X ray.

### Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to join the award winning Diabetes and Endocrinology team at a time of significant investment and service expansion. The post includes general medicine, endocrinology and diabetes management in the inpatient and outpatient setting. The exact job plan may be tailored to the interests and experience of the successful candidate.

We are a friendly and supportive team comprising with these posts 6 consultants in diabetes/endocrinology based at NUH, and three associate specialists. The resident team consists of two diabetes and endocrine specialist registrars, one maternal medicine specialist registrar, one neurology specialist registrar (rotating through GIM), one IMT3 trainee, three IMT1s, one GPVTS trainee and four FY1 doctors.

We value clinical leadership across all our specialties, and Barts Health is committed to delivering an excellent leadership development programme in partnership with the King’s Fund.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

There would be an expectation that the successful applicant would contribute to the general medical on call rota admitting patients over a 24 hour period starting at 9.00am on a 1:18 frequency with prospective cover. The on call commitment for the medical consultant includes overnight availability for telephone advice from home. Monday-Friday all medical admissions from 9.00am-8.00pm are reviewed by the Acute Admissions Consultant. Therefore the medical on call consultant is only required to do a limited post take ward round of any medical patients under age 75 years who were admitted by the night medical team and remain in the Emergency Department. At the weekend the on call consultant is required to review all patients admitted through the day and overnight on the take. The current on call rota is being reviewed and the frequency of on calls may increase up to 1:12 with appropriate reflection in job plans and reduction in intensity of the weekend workload.

The site has an evolving Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) department and Ambulatory care service and the incoming applicant will be expected to support specialty management of cases within this environment.
