This substantive Consultant post is based within the Paediatric Emergency Department and includes some Adult Emergency Medicine responsibilities. The successful candidate will contribute to weekend, on-call, and shop floor cover (08:00 to midnight, 365 days a year). A self-rostering consultant rota offers flexibility in working patterns. About You - Hold, or be within six months of obtaining, a CCT in Emergency Medicine or Paediatrics with subspecialty accreditation in Paediatric Emergency Medicine. - Demonstrate equivalent clinical experience if following a non-CCT route. - Be committed to delivering high-quality paediatric emergency care and effective multidisciplinary teamwork. Main Duties - Provide senior clinical leadership in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of children attending the Emergency Department. - Supervise and support junior and middle-grade doctors, including providing specialist advice during on-call periods. - Lead trauma team responses and participate in the consultant on-call rota to ensure timely emergency care. Interviews: Thursday 18th September 2026. ### Main duties of the job - Manage children presenting with minor and major illness and trauma. - Lead paediatric resuscitations and major trauma responses. - Provide senior clinical decision-making and support patient flow through the emergency pathway. - Supervise junior medical staff, advanced practitioners and nursing colleagues. - Liaise with paediatric, surgical, orthopaedic, intensive care and mental health services. - Definitive care of patient attendances. - Immediate resuscitation of critically ill patients and thereafter referral to the appropriate department of those patients who require admission. - Communication and liaison with other departments within the hospital both clinical and managerial. - Communication and liaison with agencies outside the hospital including the Emergency Services, GP Surgeries, Urgent Care Centre’s and Tertiary Trauma Centre. - Responsibility for the supervision, training and education of junior medical staff, with and active role in the training of nursing and other staff. - The post holder may be named as the educational supervisor of several junior medical staff and supervising the ACPs. - Continuing development of the service, using audit, the application of evidence-based medicine, support development of IT infrastructure, mentorship programme and streaming pathway. - Dealing with personnel and other managerial issues. - Support a culture of learning from excellence as well as learning from mistakes/errors. ### Detailed job description and main responsibilities Paediatric Responsibilities: Role Purpose - Provide expert assessment, diagnosis and management of acutely ill and injured infants, children and young people attending the Emergency Department. - Deliver consultant-led care, clinical leadership and supervision within the Paediatric Emergency Department (PED). - Support service development, governance, quality improvement, teaching and research activities. Main Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Duties Leadership and Governance - Lead quality improvement, clinical audit and patient safety initiatives. - Develop and implement clinical guidelines and policies for paediatric emergency care. - Contribute to departmental management and strategic planning. - Actively participate in safeguarding and child protection work. Education and Training - Deliver teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate learners. - Provide clinical and educational supervision. - Support RCEM and PEM trainee development through workplace assessments and mentoring. Research and Service Development - Participate in research and evidence-based practice. - Contribute to service innovation and pathway redesign. Qualifications - GMC registration with licence to practise. - Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Emergency Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT). - Subspecialty accreditation in Paediatric Emergency Medicine or evidence of equivalent competency.
