### Job summary

Applications are invited from eligible candidates who hold a CCT or equivalent in Intensive Care Medicine. We encourage those with both single and dual CCTs to apply for this post. There are potential sessions available within the regional Adult Critical Care Transfer Service (ACCOTS) for those that have a particular interest in transfer medicine.

You will join a dynamic, dedicated and enthusiastic team of consultants and nursing staff, supported by doctors in training, 24/7 Critical Care outreach teams and experienced Advanced Critical Care Practitioners.

The Critical Care Unit at QEHB is one of the largest single site critical care units in Europe. It is a mixed Level 2 and Level 3 facility (HDU and ITU), currently open to 67 ITU equivalent beds, or up to 80 patients, and admitting over 4000 patients per year. There are 46 Consultant Intensivists, over 450 nursing staff and 15 Advanced Critical Care Practitioners, supported by allied health professionals and several tiers of medical staff in training from anaesthetics, intensive care medicine and other medical specialities.

The QEHB is the tertiary hub for the West Midlands, with a total catchment area of approximately 9 million people for all specialities. It has a world-renowned solid organ transplantation programme encompassing transplantations in liver, kidney and heart-lung recipients as well as one of the country 's largest bone-marrow and stem cell programs.

### Main duties of the job

QEHB is also home to the regional CAR-T centre and has been approved as a one of the handful of UK sites for further expansion of its service.

The QEHB site conducts complex oncological surgery for hepatobiliary, pancreatic, upper gastrointestinal and sarcoma surgery. QEHB is a regional referral centre for neurosurgery and neurosciences, and a hub for the regional 24/7 endovascular stroke thrombectomy service. It is also a Major Trauma Centre, a regional Burns centre and hosts the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine. We deliver an elective cardiac surgery programme and are a tertiary referral unit for emergency cardiac surgical patients, including those requiring cardiac mechanical device support.

### Job responsibilities

The core component of this post is to provide critical care cover at the QE Critical Care Unit.

The Critical Care Unit is divided into 4 areas which, alongside housing general medical patients, specialise as follows:

Area A (20 level 3 beds): Liver medicine, Liver transplant and hepatobiliary surgery, upper GI and sarcoma surgery and haematology-oncology

Area B (14 Level 3-beds): Burns and Trauma, Maxillo-facial surgery and major plastics.

Area C (13 Level 3-beds): Neurosurgery and Neurosciences

Area D (20 Level 3 beds): Cardiac surgery, mechanical cardiac support, heart and lung transplantation.

A standard full time job plan will contain 10 programmed activities. A programmed activity will normally have a timetable value of 4 hours and a full-time consultant. The ITU DCC component will be 5.3PAs with 2PAs be devoted to supporting professional activities. We are looking for candidates who hold an interest in a partner speciality, we are interested in hearing from candidates who have a particular interest in Critical Care and Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine or Anaesthesia. The critical care component may include sessions supporting Critical Care Outreach.

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in all aspects of Clinical Governance ((including Departmental audit and quality improvement programmes) as developed by the Trust to monitor, maintain and develop the quality and effectiveness of care.

The department encourages interest in and support of any ongoing research projects. UHB and the department has academic links with University of Birmingham, University of Warwick and Aston University and has dedicated research facilities - NIHR/Wellcome Clinical Research Facility and Institute of Translational Medicine and a strong clinical trials pharmacy team and research laboratories
