### Job overview

An opportunity has arisen within Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) for a substantive Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Wythenshawe Hospital. The successful candidate will be a core member of the General Surgery department and Colorectal Surgery service. The post is for a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon, with a specialist interest in IBD.

### Main duties of the job

The unit provides elective and emergency general surgery, benign upper gastrointestinal, general and sub-specialist colorectal surgery.  Minimally Invasive Surgery is well established within our surgical service.

This post will maintain the efficiency and capacity of the Directorate of General Surgery and may include day case operating at Trafford General Hospital.  Emergency and Elective General surgical services are undergoing integration across MFT. The post holder will be expected to accommodate their sessions to fit into the new service. The employing trust is Manchester Foundation Trust (MFT).

## Person Specification

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Full GMC registration
- Specialist registration via CCT (within 6 months of the date of interview date), or confirmed Port-folio Certificate at date of application.

**Desirable**

- An appropriate higher colorectal surgical qualification – e.g MD or PhD

### Clinical Experience

**Essential**

- Ability to offer expert opinion on a range of prob-lems, both emergency and elective in General Surgery
- Experience in a specialist colorectal unit
- Evidence of ability to make decisions at con-sultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.
- Subspecialty interest in inflammatory bowel dis-ease

### Research Experience

**Essential**

- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems

**Desirable**

- Peer review publications
- Research grants
- Evidence of GCP training

### Skills and Knowledge

**Essential**

- Open and laparoscopic colorectal surgery
- Experience in Colonoscopy
- Evidence of experience in the management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease
- Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant
- Effective administrative and time management skills.
- Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
- Good spoken and written English. Highly devel-oped communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training
- Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities

**Desirable**

- JAG accreditation
- Evidence of post CCT training
- Evidence of Robotic experience and training
- Management qualification.

### Professional training

**Essential**

- General & Colorectal Surgery; exposure to Emergency General Surgery. Experience in In-flammatory Bowel Disease
