### Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic Consultant Colorectal Surgeon to join our team at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. The successful candidate will provide high-quality clinical care, contribute to service development, and educate and train resident staff.

### Main duties of the job

The post holder is expected to have broad experience of General Surgery and a specialist interest in Colorectal Surgery with the ability and drive to contribute to the further development of the expertise in this area. The appointee will be proficient in all aspects of Colorectal Surgery, including colonoscopy and laparoscopic resections. The appointee will also be expected to fully participate in and support the General Surgery Consultant on call rota. We are a department that provides a consultant-led service, collaborating across the surgical teams seeking to lead surgical innovation. Our department prides itself in allowing everyone to develop and bring their own areas of expertise and interest to what is already a very diverse mix of special interests. The department has historically led the way in holding senior medical management roles and we would look to new consultants to join our group of educational supervisors.

### Job responsibilities

Main duties and responsibilities

- Provide expert clinical care in General and Colorectal Surgery, including elective theatre lists, emergencies, outpatient clinics, and on-call services.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions in hospital and community settings.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of integrated clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Supervise and support resident medical staff.
- Engage in clinical audit, quality improvement, and research activities.
- Participate in clinical governance and risk management.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
- Collaborate with colleagues across departments and external partners.

Teaching and training

- Provide teaching and mentorship to medical students, resident doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.

- Support or lead research within the department.

Programmed activities (PA) allocation

The post is offered on a full-time basis, comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week.

Job Plan

This is a full-time post comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), including 1.5 SPAs for supporting professional activities and 1.5 PAs allocated to general surgery on-call commitments.

The post holder will be required to work across multiple hospital sites (Harlow, St Margarets and Herts and Essex). Adequate time for travel between sites is recognised within the job plan. Appropriate arrangements are in place to ensure continuity of patient care, including consultant cover and handover processes when the post holder is working off-site.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- Broad and relevant clinical experience in the specialty
- Experience in teaching and supervising resident doctors and medical students
- Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement
- Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion on a range of both elective and emergency problems in colorectal/ general surgery
- Full competence in laparoscopic colorectal surgery

**Desirable**

- Experience in service development or redesign
- Full JAG Accreditation in Colonoscopy
- Experience in curriculum development or educational leadership
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals; involvement in clinical research or trials
- Previous experience working in the NHS or similar healthcare system

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- FRCS or equivalent
- CCT (or equivalent) in relevant specialty or within 6 months of achieving
- Subspecialty training in Colorectal Surgery

**Desirable**

- Higher degree (e.g., MD, PhD) or additional postgraduate qualifications
- Formal teaching qualification (e.g., PGCert in Medical Education)
