### Job overview

The postholder will work as part of a team providing vascular ultrasound imaging services to the Trust.  This will require the application of a broad range of skills and experience in ultrasound to ensure the efficient operation of Ultrasonic Angiology and will liaise closely with medical and technical staff to deliver an effective service.  Independent working at outreach clinics will form a proportion of this role.   The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in audit and research projects  and will support training of more junior members of staff. There are opportunities for participating in clinical research, teaching, training and demonstrating on undergraduate courses.

The successful candidate should hold either an NHS Scientific Training Programme, Post-graduate certificate in Vascular Ultrasound or similar qualification.

This role will attract a Recruitment and Retention Premia of £5,000 which is reviewed on an annual basis.

### Main duties of the job

Our Service is delivered from dedicated, scanning rooms at both Guy’s and St Thomas sites, each equipped with duplex and TCD systems and linked across site by a dedicated PACS system and supported by an excellent administration team.   We also support spoke hospitals in the South East Thames Vascular Network.   We provide a comprehensive vascular ultrasound service for adults and children.  Continuing professional development is supported, staff are encouraged  to attend National meetings including; the Vascular Society of Great Britain & Ireland, Society for Vascular Technology and the British Medical Ultrasound Society. There are opportunities for participating in clinical research, teaching, training and demonstrating on undergraduate courses.

One-stop and outreach clinic roles will give you the opportunity to work independently, managing your workload and interacting directly with Clinicians. This post is subject to an Enhanced DBS check.

- Carry out specialised duplex ultrasound investigations on patients in the department and independently in other locations (clinics, ITU, HDU, theatres and outreach clinics).

- Make complex diagnostic measurements involving imaging of blood   vessels and measurement of blood flow characteristics.
- Be able to interpret complex anatomy and pathology in order to provide clear diagnostic findings.
- Make complex interpretive judgements based on interactively acquired ultrasound blood velocity data and imaging. Make further measurements as necessary.
- Record test information and report results and diagnostic findings to the referring clinicians.

## Person Specification

### Skills

**Essential**

- Competency in primary duplex areas: AAA, ABPI, lower limb arterial. Lower limb venous - in primary and postsurgical settings &/or carotid and vertebral duplex assessment.
- Specialised knowledge of a range of clinical measurement techniques, especially vascular imaging and blood flow measurement.
- Specialised knowledge of clinical issues and their implications for vascular ultrasound diagnosis.
- High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure, patient bodily fluids and infectious diseases.

**Desirable**

- Specialised knowledge of the full range of duplex ultrasound scanning techniques and protocols related to arterial and vascular imaging and blood flow measurement

### Experience

**Essential**

- Vascular ultrasound 3 years including training
- Highly developed specialist knowledge across a range of working procedures and practices in the field of Ultrasonic Angiology, building on theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
- Specialist training on and practical experience with a wide range of ultrasound equipment and computer applications, with vascular experience.

**Desirable**

- Advanced knowledge of a range of scientific principles and measurements related to non-ionising radiation.

### Qualification

**Essential**

- Certification in Vascular Ultrasound (PGC or MSC) or equivalent

**Desirable**

- Relevant MSc or higher degree
