Clinical Teaching Fellow

Salary £45,504 - £60,199 per annum

Plus 1b banding supplement

Plus Distant Islands Allowance of £1,461 per annum

40 hours post

Fixed Term Contract for 12 months starting August 2026

The Clinical Teaching Fellow post is starting from August 2026 at NHS Western Isles (Stornoway). This post is aimed at those doctors who have recently completed the foundation programme or core training. The post will involve teaching provision for medical undergraduates and the hospital workforce, working closely with the Medical Education Co-ordinator, with time allocated for personal development opportunity, tailored to individual experience and seniority where appropriate.

This post will afford a successful applicant the opportunity to experience work within the health board with protected and mentored development time. Development time can be used to develop experience in quality improvement projects, medical education, research and management skills.

## Person Specification

### Health

**Essential**

- Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice) and informs of any health issues or restrictions that may affect training.

### Eligibility

**Essential**

- Eligibility to work in the UK

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- FACD 5.2 for successful completion of Foundation Year 2 or equivalent
- (ALS) Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date

**Desirable**

- Distinction, prizes or honours during Postgraduate training
- Additional related qualifications, e.g. intercalated degree, BSc, BA, BMedSci or equivalent
- Teaching/Medical Education experience/qualification

### Clinical Experience

**Essential**

- Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
- Minimum of 1 year clinical practice working as a doctor within the UK
- Evidence of achievement of postgraduate medical training in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice.
- Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems
- Ability to prioritise clinical need
- Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk
- Recognition of, and ability to undertake the initial management of, an acutely ill patient.

**Desirable**

- Well-presented logbook or professional portfolio

### Fitness to Practice

**Essential**

- Is up to date and fit to practice safely without restriction

### Teaching & Training

**Essential**

- Enthusiastic in teaching clinical skills in the workplace or training environment.
- Evidence of contributing to teaching & learning of others

**Desirable**

- Experience of simulation-based teaching
- Has successfully completed a ‘training the trainers’ or ‘teaching skills’ course
- Expertise in use of presentation software e.g. PowerPoint

### GMC/Specialist Registration

**Essential**

- Full registration from GMC with a licence to practice

### Research & Audit Experience

**Essential**

- Research Skills: Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management & evidence-based practice
- Understanding of basic research principles, methodology & ethics, with a potential to contribute to research
- Audit: Evidence of active participation in audit

- Evidence of relevant academic & research achievements
